Importing Government data

The Canadian government gives out map data for free at: http://www.geogratis.gc.ca ...but depending on license interpretations, maybe it's not quite free.

If we can use this, then obviously it will make a massive difference, and will be a major importing operation, so getting to the bottom of the issue should be a priority.

User:Dshpak: I have been in contact with GeoBase regarding the potential use of GeoBase data in OpenStreetMap. As of May 2007, the response has been that we are more than welcome to incorporate the data, if we change our attribution licence to include GeoBase (that is, we must credit GeoBase, and anyone that uses our data must also credit GeoBase alongside OSM). This doesn't work with the current OSM model (we do not support this sort of attribution). GeoBase is unable to modify their licence or donate the data to the project, because they are data distributors, not the owners or creators of the data; the data is compiled from multiple other sources that have contributed the data to GeoBase under their current licence. I do not know, but I suspect, that similar problems will arise with the Geogratis data.

User:Nickb had communications with them more recently (April 2008) in which they seemed to be anxious for us to use their data! ...however there's still potential issues with attribution. See this message and the forwarded mail below it

See Potential Datasources for more general data sources covering many countries.

The Atlas of Canada is another potential source

--acrosscanadatrails 02:04, 24 July 2008 (UTC) The Ibycus Topo website: http://ibycus.com/ibycustopo/ is directly derived from the GeoBase Website, it can be downloaded onto the Garmin as whole mapset for Canada. See website for terms and conditions of use. (updated) using Kosmos it lets you view Landsat images as well as OpenAerialMaps. .. OpenTopoMaps is a similar site, perhaps the GeoBase attribution could be listed there?

--acrosscanadatrails 21:27, 24 July 2008 (UTC) With many thanks to everyone on the talk-ca discussion list, the latest update is this.

  • The reason GeoBase Data is not yet on OSM is because of the differences in the OpenStreetMap License (Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike license) and GeoBase Unrestricted Use License Agreement
  • The OSM Foundation and GeoBase are currently working on the best way to incorporate this data; For both the physical map, and the intellectual vision for OSM.
  • OSM Foundation & Geobase are aware that there are many options with the use of add-ons (such as layers, programs & websites) to OSM.
  • Progress looks promising, and so, because it involves the Government of Canada, and a Legal Entity (OpenStreetMap Foundation). .. it takes time.. but when it is done, it will be very clear.

Goals

If you have a goal that you are working towards or one that you would like to see get done (and are maybe willing to get the ball rolling) then add it to the list here, create a section where it can be coordinated and tracked, and a way of measuring progress.

  • Canada WikiMAP Tiles This is the Chart showing the mapping progress for Canada, using GeoBase .5 x .25 degree rectangles, as well as all other Created Transparent Garmin IMG files, ready for use.
    • National Map Project

Combining all the different trails and routes all over Canada. http://forums.calgarycachers.net/viewforum.php?f=30

    • OSM Canada Map An on-demand OSM Map Book for all of Canada. Where the entire book, cover to cover is all updated and edited wiki style, all by OSM Users.

Creating the GPS Map showing all of the Trans Canada Trail, as a transparent overlay map, with the OSM relation added to each segment as it grows.

Creating a ¨Virtual Railway¨ with a Multi-lane, Multi-use, set of transparent overlay tracks to create recommended routes across Canada. (Note: this route exists only online, on the GPS MAP, and as a relation route. These are NOT shown as physically marked routes. ... except where the route follows the completed Trans Canada Trail segments.

The intent is to Mirror the WikiProject United Kingdom National Cycle Network & WikiProject United Kingdom Long Distance Paths also include the hiking, Snowmobile, Motorcycle, and other trails in Canada

How do I tag Canadian Roads?

Map Features is a great place to start, with generic instruction for tagging any OSM feature. Have a look at Canadian tagging guidelines for one interpretation of the tagging rules applied to a Canadian jurisdiction.

How do I tag Canadian Recreational Trails?
