Central London is a area in UK at latitude 51.52, longitude -0.127.

The London mapping party was a meet up on 27th/28th Jan 2007 which resulted in a lot of progress in mapping central London. The city centre was sliced up into areas. That information may get moved to here

Feature notes

London is a particulary challenging metropolis to map. This will give rise to some ideas for new Map Features

Features Status To do
River Thames Ojw is tracing from the satellite photos, and marking as "waterway=riverbank" - may need changing when Proposed features/Large rivers is discussed further
Docks
Underground railway systems Above-ground locations of the stations are being marked as they're found, typically with "rail=station"
Mainline railway stations Done: Euston, Kings X, St. Pancras, Charing X, Waterloo
Docklands light railway
Road systems
Pedestrian areas
One-way systems
Landmarks "poi=Name of landmark" ?
Major/famous shops Treat as landmark, or propose a "shop=" tag
Bus routes Wait for the editors to make "multiple ways per segment" easier?
Congestion charging zone Easy enough to find the edges where they cross roads Propose feature for this
Multi-grade street systems e.g. Holborn, Waterloo Need to consider ways of representing bridges
Other underground features e.g. Kingsway tunnel Mark the ends and propose a new map feature?
Underground rivers Ignore?
Reconfigurable roads e.g. Oxford street has different limitations on traffic type that can be selected with an electronic signpost. e.g. Kingsway tunnel is one-way in a different direction at different times of day
Skyscrapers For basic 3D modelling Add some sort of "building_height=" or "num_floors=" tag for nodes?

West End

This is a Mapnik rendering of the West End showing the full length of Oxford Street and areas around.

Image:Central london coverage.png

With a good level of mapping completeness at March 2007, it has been a Featured image.

However it does show some unmapped areas around Edgeware Road and Marleybone. An Osmarender view would show that segments are present for all the streets in this area, but they have not been set as ways and tagged with street names. These un-wayyed segments don't show up in a Mapnik rendering.

It also has some rendering weirdness because one area mapped during the London mapping party has an area defined for the building types (giving it a darker grey background). We'll need to decide if other areas of central london should have this.
