Helsinki is the capital of Finland. With a population of 564 521 (1.1.2007) it is the largest city in Finland. The greater Helsinki region (pääkaupunkiseutu) has over 1 million residents and includes the neighbouring cities of Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen. In 2009 Helsinki will gain more land, some 30 square km with only 1500 residents, from Sipoo, a much more sparsely populated city east of Helsinki.

highway=motorway on vain "moottoritie" -liikennemerkillä merkatuille teille, ts. Helsingin alueella Länsiväylä, Turunväylä, Lahdenväylä ja Porvoonväylä. Kehä I ei ole "virallinen" moottoritie, joten se on highway=trunk.

Helsinki on kokonaisuudessaan WikiProject_Finland -sivulla tarkoitettua taajama-aluetta, joten pääväylien luokittelussa ei voi nojata pelkästään teiden numeroihin. Useampi näistä ei edes ole kylttien mukaan kantatie/valtatie, esim. 3-tie alkaa vasta Hämeenlinnanväylän alusta ja siihen asti Mannerheimintiellä opasteet ovat vain "tätä tietä kolmostielle". Kuitenkin E12-väylä alkaa jo keskustasta.
Jotta luokituksia ei muuteltaisi edestakaisin, on alle kerätty perusteluineen tiettyjen teiden jo vuoden 2007 puolella vakiintuneet luokitukset. Jos jonkun näistä pitäisi mielestäsi olla eri luokassa, toivottavasti lisäät kommentin Helsingin keskustelu-sivulle.

Residential and other streets
Mostly in place, but missing at least where there's no satellite images available. Road names in Swedish are mostly missing, yet requested for in WikiProject Finland editing notes. Older anonymous mappings done with Potlatch need partial verification: unconnected ways exist, some barriers haven't been mapped and several one way streets are not marked as such.
The neighbouring cities of Espoo and Vantaa have many totally unmapped areas, especially outside the urban areas.

In the table above, other road features include: speed limits, number of lanes, access and turning restrictions etc. and as such the numbers are educated guesses. For any real routing usage these would be most beneficial.
Yahoo imagery
Coverage is good but distortions are common: many straight streets and buildings look curved. Images were also taken at an angle so the building's roofs are not in the same place as their foundations. This has to be considered if tracing building outlines from the images.
