Progress mapping Korea
Our progress mapping Korea is only maginally better than zero. Obviously it is limited by the size of community we can attract there, so if you are in Korea, please get involved!
Cities
- Pyongyang (map) some main highways.
- Seoul ([1]) One of the largest cities in the world. No progress, just some messy Prototype Global Shoreline (PGS) riverbanks. Someone's been mapping motorways outside the city to the south.
...there are some other towns/cities, but there seems to be a massive lack of place tags (which get rendered as place name lables on the map). (Currently, Korean tagging guide don't have guideline on place tags.)

How you can help
In and outside Korea
There are many things that can be done by people living both inside and outside South Korea. Some of these tasks will be helpful to all countries. (You might consider moving to Korea. There are many jobs in the ESL industry. See Dave's ESL Cafe for more information.)
Clean up the wiki.
Wikis always need editing. Concentrate on organizing the data that is there instead of creating new stuff. Read the talk pages and the mailing list archives to determine what the consensus is and then edit the pages to reflect that consensus. It's difficult to discuss changes to practices and policies when everything is so jumbled up. Join the newbie and talk lists.
Edit the JOSM information
Learn JOSM and improve the resources for new users. This should make it easier to recruit and retain new people, and cut down on the newbie and talk mailing list traffic.
Create maps
There are few map makers in Korea. It makes sense for those in Korea to concentrate on the tasks can only be done by those in Korea such as data collection. While a little clunky right now it is possible for anyone in the world to get the data necessary to create maps of Korea. Leave a message for User:Korea See the Korea Mapping Guide.
Translate
Recruiting Koreans to help in many cases will require translation. If information is found that is compatible with the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 license then it will most likely require translation.

Collect data
Collect data points
The kinds of GPS units suitable for mapping are expensive in Korea and are not popular. GPS units to add to PDA's and computers are relatively inexpensive. If you already have a car and a laptop a USB or bluetooth receiver would be a relatively small investment. Many PDA's and smaller laptops come with a GPS, but will most likely need software installed to use for collecting data.
Most people will want to obtain a GPS from outside the country. The easiest way to avoid duties is to bring a GPS as a personal item when flying to Korea. Search for threads on Dave's ESL Cafe for information on avoiding duties on electronic items.

Collect other information
You can collect street names, route number, landmark descriptions, etc. to be added to maps created with the GPS data. Contact User:Korea to request GPS data for your area. See the Korea Mapping Guide for more information.
한국어 사용자를 위한 안내
현재 한국의 지도는 거의 안 된 상태나 마찬가지입니다. 아마도 사용자가 거의 없는 게 그 이유인 듯 하고, 한국의 네비게이션 장비들이 워낙 싸고 좋아서 이기도 합니다. 어쨌든 많은 사람들이 참여해주었으면 합니다.
지형도
현재 한국의 지형도는 무척 부실한 상태입니다. 서울의 예를 들 경우, 한강의 일부 지역은 강이 아닌 육지로 표시된 상태이고, 다리 역시 육지로 표시된 상태입니다. 가장 먼저 이루어져야 할 일 몇 가지 중의 한 가지로 보입니다.
도시
몇몇 도시의 이름이 붙어 있는 상태이고, 대부분의 도시에 이름이 붙어 있지 않은 상태입니다. 이름 붙이기 기능을 사용하여 도시의 이름을 붙여주시기 바랍니다.
한국의 OSM 사용자
아직까지는 많지 않습니다. 자신의 위키 사용자 페이지를 Category:Users in Korea에 추가해 주십시오.

위키 수정하기
한국 사용자를 늘리기 위한 가장 좋은 방법은 한글화로 보입니다. 새로운 글을 작성하기보다는 기존의 글을 번역하는 데 먼저 중점을 맞추어야 할 것으로 보입니다. 위키에 관심이 있으신 분들은 두려워하지 마시고, 자신이 공헌할 수 있는 부분을 작성/수정/번역해주시면 좋겠습니다.
한국 현실에 맞는 Tag 정의하기
OSM 지도를 제작하기 위해서는 기본 지형 데이터와 함께 Tag이 있어야 합니다. 즉, 수집된 데이터가 의미를 가지며, OSM 지도 상에 표현되기 위해서는 Tag이 붙어 있어야 합니다. OSM은 기본적으로 사용되는 Tag이 존재합니다. 이에 대해서는 Map_Features를 참조하시기 바랍니다. 그러나 이런 Tag 가이드라인은 대략적인 가이드라인일 뿐 한국적인 현실에는 적용할 수 없습니다. 그러므로, 한국적인 현실에 맞는 Tag 가이드라인을 만들어야 합니다. 한국의 Tag 가이드라인에 대해서는 Ko:Map_Features를 참조하시기 바랍니다.
GPS 데이터 수집
자신의 GPS가 GPX 형식으로 데이터를 변환할 방법이 있다면 OpenStreetMap을 위한 데이터로 활용할 수 있습니다. 이 데이터를 JOSM이나 유사한 소프트웨어를 활용해서 서버로 업로드할 수 있습니다.
수집된 데이터를 지도로 변환
수집된 데이터는 두 가지 형식으로 존재할 수 있습니다. GPS가 있다면 자신의 로컬 드라이브에 GPX 파일이 있을 수 있습니다. 이럴 경우 직접 지도로 변환하여 업로드할 수 있습니다. GPS가 없다면 다른 사람이 GPX 경로를 서버에 올려놓았을 수 있습니다. 그 데이터를 다운로드 받아서 지도 데이터로 변환할 수 있게 Tag을 붙여 다시 올려주시면 됩니다. 자세한 것은 한국 지도 만들기 가이드를 참고하시기 바랍니다.
