Description

London is the capital city of the United Kingdom, surrounded by the M25 motorway. It is the largest city in Europe (over twice the size of Paris). See also Central London

All road distances to the destination "London" refer to Charing Cross.

Events

See Current Events for a list of other mapping parties / conference / social events, which come to London fairly often.

OSM Coverage

Quite a large chunk of North / North West / South West London is done. Much of the remaining area within the M25 has been traced from Yahoo imagery already, but needs mapping properly to add names and features that can't be seen from the aerial imagery.

We have more or less complete coverage of London underground network, with just a few tagging glitches to iron out. See the Tube Network Map We're working on all of greater London's overground railways. We are collecting these GPS readings for all the stations on the Tube Stations page (as well as putting them straight into the database).

Yahoo! Aerial imagery coverage

Yahoo! Aerial Imagery covers a very large area of London. Everywhere inside the M25 and also Leatherhead, Redhill, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Gravesend, Brentwood, Bishops Stortford, Harlow, Waltham Cross, Ware, Hertford, Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, St Albans, Harpenden, Hemel Hempstead, Slough & Windsor

Outline of the area covered by Yahoo! Aerial imagery

We can map these areas much more easily. We still need to visit the streets to gather street names and other details, but the general road layout can be mapped without even going there. See Yahoo! Aerial Imagery. Let's get the major roads and rails mapped in.

Completion by postcode areas

Those interested in covering an area should indicate so below. Those considering an area should qualify it with a ?

Of course organising by postcode area is a little awkward, because the post code system isn't free (yet). normal London Postcode map, Properly free, but rather higgledy-piggledy map.

There's a fair amount of quality trackpoints south of the river in the Croydon/Coulsdon area, but not many streets laid down. Dig in!

Completion by London Borough

Borough Border? Coverage assessment Notes
Inner London
Camden Done Pretty good
Greenwich OK Missing quite a lot of street detail
Hackney Done
Hammersmith and Fulham
Islington Done OK Missing lots of detail around Highbury and Islington station.
Kensington and Chelsea
Lambeth Some We had a Stockwell mapping evening which improved coverage in the middle/north. Kennington mapping evening is half in this borough. That'll hopefully finish off the most northerly missing sections.
Lewisham
Southwark  ? Poor Kennington mapping evening (Happening Wed 14th May) is half within Southwark (North West end of the borough)
Tower Hamlets Done
Wandsworth 15% 90% Just a bit South of Tooting and a bit East of Battersea Park remaining to be covered
Westminster Done
Outer London
Barking and Dagenham
Barnet Done steve8
Bexley Some Traced roads from Yahoo TimSC
Brent
Bromley
Croydon
Ealing
Enfield Done 90% Further POIs, major buildings and some fine detail to add steve8
Haringey Done
Harrow
Havering
Hillingdon
Hounslow 100% 100%

All named roads, footpaths and parks believed complete (possible exceptions are private gated roads where the gate was closed..).

Still to do:

  • cycle routes: 1%? (the council is terrible at signing these)
  • bus stops: 5%? (do I care?). Existing stops are mostly missing name and ref no too.
  • post boxes: 40%?
  • pubs: 95%? How to prove?
  • schools: 100%? (need to prove this, wish the OS hadn't insisted on northing/easting being removed from the public release of the schools database. OS are the bane of our existence.)
  • important buildings: 5%? ('building' only came along after I'd done half of this)
  • Post codes: 0%. I want to do this one. But how? A few streets do have postcode on the sign, and like an idiot I didn't record them
  • Monuments and historical sites: 5%?

Status by 'town' August 2008:

  • Hounslow: roads complete
  • Heston: roads complete

  • Hanworth: roads complete
  • Bedfont: roads complete

  • Chiswick: roads probably complete

Borough border complete but I'm aware it's different from the official maps in a few minor places

Borough boundaries

progress tagging borders as of May 2008

Note that most online maps showing the position of the borders are copyrighted. Even supposedly open licensed maps on wikipedia are actually derived from copyrighted sources. Ideally we'll keep it clean by surveying signs in the streets, hence the slow progress. Keep a look out for those "Welcome to London Borough of X" signs while you're out and about.

Boundaries between the London boroughs have been tagged boundary=administrative and left:district=name right:district=name
