Features
Distributed under the GNU General Public License. Source is available but also a binary for Windows. Merkaartor is still in early development but already has some unique features such as...
- Map view near-WYSIWYG, anti-aliased
- Transparent display of map features like roads, amenities and areas
- Style editor for the map display, including multiple styles
- Support for handling separated highways
- Easy up/download from OpenStreetMap data (but see this note)
- Native application (developed with the Qt4 toolkit)
- Import NMEA-Files (JOSM can't do that)

Binary packages are available for various Linux distributions, Mac OS X/Intel, and Windows
Although compiling Merkaartor on your own is not hard and will ensure that you work with the latest version.

If you don't compile Merkaartor from source, you may want to get for your distributions from these locations:

Development
Merkaartor is developed in the OpenStreetMap SVN repository at http://svn.openstreetmap.org/applications/editors/merkaartor/ (browse in Trac). Read here how to compile it.
