Points of interest

This page describes methods of storing, processing, and displaying points of interest.

Types

• Churches, schools, town halls, distinctive buildings
• Post offices, shops, postboxes, telephone boxes
• Pubs (pub names are useful when navigating by map)
• Car parks and lay-bys (and whether free or not)
• Speed cameras?
• Tourist attractions

Integration with OpenStreetMap

These are handled as nodes, possibly without any segments attached. Where the point of interest is actually part of the segmented path, for instance a railway level crossing, then appropriate key/value pairs should be applied to a relevant node on a segmented path.

The Upload tool for waypoints is currently hosted on Ojw's site, and allows you to upload a whole file of GPS waypoints to OpenStreetMap, giving them labels as you do.
