Rationale

Provide a way to indicate an impediment to some sort of movement along a route. It may be temporary or permanent, and may be openable (like a gate). It may also be physical or legal (e.g. a stop sign)

This proposal is not intended to cover barriers in waterways, which probably belong under natural (e.g. waterfalls, rapids) or man_made (e.g. dams)

Usage

Linear

barrier (rendered along the way)
  • ford to cross rivers not that deep
  • bollards a long line of bollards, eg. around the each of a plaza/pedestrian area

Node

barrier (rendered perpendicular to/across the way)
  • bollards solid (usually concrete or metal) pillar or pillars in the middle of the road to prevent traffic by some traffic
  • bus_sluice
  • cycle_barrier a steel barrier to slow down cyclists at dangerous spots or to keep bigger vehicles from passing (in German: Umlaufsperre, Drängelgitter)
  • gate swinging gate
  • gate:lift bar that raises, automatically or manually
  • gate:kissing a type of gate that prevents access for livestock and/or bicycles
  • gate:bump a type of gate that is self-closing and allows vehicles to open it by running into it.
  • gatehouse
  • speed_bump a traffic-calming bump, placed in the road to greatly reduce traffic speed
  • speed_hump similar to a speed bump, but more gradual, allowing higher speeds
  • speed_cushion narrow speed hump, allowing wide (mostly emergency) vehicles to avoid them
  • speed_table similar to a speed hump, but with a flat top section, generally the size of a vehicles wheelbase. Reduces traffic speed less than a hump or bump.
  • spikes severe tire damage!
  • stile stairs over a fence
  • cattle_grid
  • toll_booth
  • ford to cross streams

Representation

Comment: It may be better to render a line across the way as is currently once was done with highway=gate in osmarender. --Edgemaster 12:24, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Deprecates

highway
  • gate
  • stile
  • cattle_grid
  • toll_booth
  • ford

Comments

access restrictions can be used where necessary to allow certain types of traffic.

A bollard which allows bicycles and pedestrians:

barrier=bollard,bicycle=yes,foot=yes

A one-way exit

barrier=spikes,foot=yes,oneway=yes

An operator=* tag may be used to indicate who operates the barrier (e.g. who has keys to a locked gate)
