SRTM

In 2000 NASA flew the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) to obtain elevation data for most of the globe. This data is freely available for download from the NASA website (http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm/).
SRTM data has been used in many maps and projects and can also be used in conjunction with OSM data.
