Where do I get a drink?

There are over 500 licenced premises in the Sydney CBD. It seems clear that if every single one is labelled on the CBD map in the main layer, there you are not going to be able to see the streets for the pubs. Improvements in rendering technology will allow layers of mapping in the Sydney CBD, put until that happens, mapping pubs, bars etc in the Sydney CBD is probably one of the least helpful things that can be done to make the Sydney CBD map more useful. Layers, steps, paths, parks, street names and locations all need work.

What is a Motorway

The roads listed above are the Sydney Motorways/Freeways - even though some other short sections of road have freeway conditions for short periods. Draw those roads dual carriageway roads (Primary for main roads, Trunk for metroads).

Routes Numbers (ref) in Sydney and Alphanumeric Numbering

Within the Sydney metro area there are Metroads (MRx), State Highways (SHxx), and the M7.

The road numbering system will be replaced by an alphanumeric system within Sydney. Most road signs have these new alphanumeric numbers ready to go, and just need to be uncovered. Some of them have already been uncovered (M1, at Helensburg, A2 on Windsor Road, M4, M5 at Rhodes for example).

They will replace all Metroad and State Highway numbering within Sydney, but for now they are not used in Sydney street mapping.

Yahoo Imagery in Sydney

High resolution yahoo imagery is available for all of the Sydney metropolitan area, cloud free! This imagery can be extremely accurate in some areas (as accurate as GPS readings) and in other areas can be easily be off by 10 metres of so. It usually suffices to give good outlines for coastlines, rivers, parks etc. This can be made more accurate over time by surveying areas.

Best to indicate if the source of a way is yahoo_imagery, so it can be a candidate for surveying over time.

History

The OpenStreetMap map of Sydney was initiated during a visit in 2005 by Etienne, with major initial contributions 2005-2007 by Mike Collinson. There are ongoing contributions by Brian Yap to start filling out the western suburbs. MikeCollinson
