Description

The highway=cycleway is the primary way to indicate that the used way is mainly or exclusively for bicycles.

No two cyclists will ever agree what constitutes a good cycle route. Cyclists can seek out anything from only off-road routes to the quickest route on a multi-lane highway. Some want a flat commute, while others seek out hills for a recreational challenge. This is the strength of OSM. It can capture the cycling relevant data as possible, and each cyclist can choose the way that best suits.

How to map

Image:ElementWay.png To tag a cycleway just create the way and mark them with highway=cycleway. This implies that the route is designated for bicycles and that foot traffic may be allowed (look default Access-Restrictions). Use the access=* tags to modify the restrictions if necessary. If this way has a name then add this with name=*. To indicate that this way is part of a route network, see Cycle routes for a full guide.

Additional information about the character of this way can be given with the cycleway=* tag. The cycleway=* should as well be used if you already used highway=* for something else than cycleway and just want to mark a way that runs along a street.

Special situations

In the case you do not have a normal cycleway you should take a look on these sites:

  • cycleway=* - Allows tagging of a cycleway which is on a road
  • bridge=yes - If the way goes over a street or waterway.
  • tunnel=yes - If the way goes below a street or waterway.
