Summary
Definition
"A pier is a raised walkway over water, supported by widely spread piles or pillars. The lighter structure of a pier allows tides and currents to flow almost unhindered, whereas the more solid foundations of a quay or the closely-spaced piles of a wharf can act as breakwaters, and are consequently more liable to silting. Piers can range in size and complexity from a simply lightweight wooden structure to major structures extended over a mile out to sea." From [1]
Opinion
I'm not sure about the proposed rendering as a thick black line, as this will obscure any other items rendered. For instance, Ryde Pier, on the Isle of Wight, has a railway line on it, which would get lost if the pier were rendered black. Dmgroom 12:55, 28 Jul 2006 (BST)
How about rendering it with a thin black casing, and a core of light brown, it should be distinctive enough?Dmgroom 00:29, 3 Aug 2006 (BST)
- As there is no definition, I'm not sure what 'pier' means in a global context. Is it designed specifically for public amusement places such as Brighton or Blackpool piers in the UK and Santa Monica in the US? Or does it related to a structure built out in to the water on piers (columns driven into the sea-bed)? May I suggest the proposer considers either supporting man_made=jetty or clearly delinating purpose? MikeCollinson 00:45, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
