Summary
For narrow rivers which will be rendered as a line. For larger rivers see waterway=riverbank. For really small rivers and streams, see waterway=stream.
How to Map
| To map a river make a simple way. Add the waterway=river tag to it.
For larger rivers you may want to create separate ways for the two river banks. See Tag:waterway=riverbank You should also add a name with name=* if it's known. Do not add natural=water to the way since this is intended for areas forming lakes. |
Extended Tags
width=* to indicate the width in meters. This is an approximate average width of the river throughout most of length of that bit of river. You can use width=5 or width=5m to tag a river with a width of 5 meters.
WikiProject Whitewater Maps proposes several additional tags
