another page for newbies? wiki organisation
I don't think this new Newbie page is necessary. We don't need another page for introducing the project to newbies. We already have Help Documentation linking to About, Browsing and Editing, which I see as the main pages for introducing newbies.
Somebody then created Portal:Users which is also an introduction for newbies. People have even gone to the trouble of translating this in several languages. "Portal:Users" is a bad name for it (See Talk:Portal:Users), and this verbose introduction should relate to Help Documentation in more clear manner.
I think the contents of Portal:Users fit well with the title of the 'Newbie' page, so moving all that content (including translations) to this page title, might be a good first step to sort it all out. Any other ideas?

- Oh! Another one! Beginners Guide. Looks nice... very nice... but seriously now, no more new pages to introduce the project! we need to do a lot of merging. - Harry Wood 12:16, 25 March 2007 (BST)
- This page is just the main links page for a begginer so I think its needed. A begginner doens't want to have to trawl wiki pages finding help, they just want to get going.
- I added the begginers guide because I keep seeing the same questions arise again and again, from people that could propably find the information if they looked hard enough, and new 'what' they didn't understand, and needed to look for, but thats not what a begginer should really have to do I don't think. There is a difference between pages of filtered information, and a tutorial that lists each step, explains every term it uses in a simple way. I stuck plenty of links on the begginers guide also to link it in with everything so people should be able to tell where to go after wards for futher help, wich covers most of the links on this page.
- I agree though, no more!. Personally I would remove some of the help things you linked to, but As long as data isn't thrown at a new person, I don't think it hurts to have help in differnet forms around. I partly simplified this page also, but maybe more of those links are unnessesery on a Newbie page, but rather should go on the 'Mapper' (silly title) page, or just be removed. - Also: Starter Tutorial and 30 Second Introduction (pending its deletion). Getting Involved is also similar. Mysteriously named Running Stitch Pecha Cucha words is another OSM intro, in speech form. I must say that coherent organization is not this wiki's strong point. —raf 02:23, 27 March 2007 (BST)
- Hehehe Yeah that is a mysterious name. Oh PdfManual is another one I forgot to mention. -- Harry Wood 09:58, 27 March 2007 (BST)
'Newbie' Redirected
So Ben.'s redirected Newbie to Beginners' Guide, and changed the Main Page link. I think that's sensible. One less entry page, of which we have too many, as discussed above (discussion was also moved here)
Still large areas of unnecessary duplication: Portal:Users and to a lesser extent Help Documentation -- Harry Wood 10:51, 4 June 2007 (BST)
ImageMap for linking the areas of the 1-2-3-4-5 image needed
I would like to add an ImageMap to the nice 1-2-3-4-5-image shown on this page. I suppose that many visitors of this page try clicking on this image to get to one of the 5 pages for further reading. There has to be the ImageMap-Extension for MediaWiki installed first, but i don't know whom to ask for doing this. As an alternative it may would be possible to split the image into 5 parts, each linking to one wiki-page. If there are reasons for not installing the ImageMap-extension, maybe this would be an option. --WanTan 12:10, 8 July 2007 (BST)
Perhaps we should rename this page Nubistan?
