Currently mapping
In no particular order.
- Blackbird Leys and Greater Leys.
- Headington and surroundings.
- Villages and towns passed through on the local Sunday CTC rides.
Tools
Getting around by: bicycle. Fast enough for mapping roads in town, plus you can park easily and go places you wouldn't be able to go by car.
Making tracks with: Nokia N810. Built-in GPS and camera plus the excellent maemo-mapper. It's easy to get Yahoo imagery, OSM OsmaRender and OSM Maplint tiles onto it too. Unfortunately, every camera app I've tried so far has stability issues, sometimes freezing or crashing the device sometimes within the 1st 2 or so pictures. I've settled on the VideoCamera app in the end, and at least it takes a reasonable 640x480 pic (right, after resaving its 100% quality JPEG at 80%) which is good enough for note taking. To work around the camera crashing and losing its NTP synchronisations, I tend to leave the camera app running after gently and patiently walking it through its problem times.
Associating image timestamps with GPX dumps and adding EXIF GPS voodoo with: my own Dodgy Perl Script, which I should really publish sometime.
Editing maps with: JOSM mostly - I like the features, and I'm OK with the clunkiness. The AgPifoJ plugin makes my style of photo note-taking a breeze. Still trying to like Potlatch.
