State Of The Map 2008

• I will join the conference.
• Arrivial at Dublin from Munich at 2008-07-10 by Aer Lingus EI353.
• Returning to Munich from Dublin at 2008-07-17 by Aer Lingus EI356.
• Having a rental car for that week.
• Combining the trip to SOTM with some holiday.

Mapping interests (work in progress)

My focus is on mapping of roads. So most of my mapping is done by car. Areas e.g. forests are mapped often via satellite.
Main areas of activities:

• Winnenden and surrounding area in the Rems-Murr-Kreis (for example Berglen und Remstal)
• Germering (a city west of Munich)
• Hohenstadt (roads are finished)
• Elchingen (Oberelchingen, Unterelchingen, near Ulm)
• München (especially west and north)
• Canary Islands (working based on satellite pictures and aditional knowledge and traks from holidays).
  • Lots of tracks have been made at the south of Fuerteventura in autumn 2007.
  • Some tracks on Tenerife in spring 2008 (still in processing).
• German motorway A8 and neighbourhood between Stuttgart and Munich
• ...

Mapping finished

...although mapping will never be finished...

• completion of the Autobahnkreuz Elchingen (A7/A8, near Ulm)
• Breuningsweiler (incorporated village of Winnenden)

Equipment for OSM

• Laptop for logging of GPS data and data processing (e.g. JOSM)
• GPS receiver (see below)
• new December 2007: Pentax K100d Super for fotos

GPS devices used

• Haicom HI-203E
  • wired mouse with serial interface, Evermore chipset
  • my rating: old chipset, outdated for my current performance requirements. Although: device was OK the time it was purchased (long time before start of my contribution to OSM)
• Haicom HI-204III
  • SIRF III wired mouse with serial interface
  • my rating: well known good chipset, I am still content with the device
• new April 2007: Wintec WBT 201
  • Bluetooth GPS mouse with integrated logger
  • uses a rechargeable battery in the same size as the Nokia BL-4C
  • my rating:
    • very nice small device, I am very content with the device, my workhorse since I have the device
  • still my main workhorse
• new October 2007: i-Blue 747
  • Bluetooth GPS mouse with integrated logger
  • my rating:
    • still in evaluation, but seems to be OK and inexpensive, ratings of performance by other users is very good
    • might have some problems with reliability of operation (information from another user)

Software used for OSM

• JOSM, THE editor for OSM
• JOSM plugins currently used: Name Finder, slippy map chooser, utilsplugin, Validator, WMSPlugin, YWMS.
• Earlier used plugins now included in JOSM: MapPaint.
• GPSBabel including GUIs for conversion of GPS data.
• geosetter to geolocate photographs using GPS tracks.

Tags missed in OSM

I miss some tags which should be proposed via proposed features process (or are already in the process currently):

• RESTRICTIONS: roads (or what ever) in building process
• RESTRICTIONS: roads (or what ever) in planning status
• HIGHWAY: Wendeplatte / turning_circle
• SHOP / AMENITY: Autowaschstraße / car_wash
• Informationstafeln
• Besenwirtschaft
• Doktor (doctor), Zahnarzt (dentist) => should be solved in a generic way to also include specialists (HNO/ENT, eye specialist, ...)
• ...
