I'm Christoph Eckert and living in Karlsruhe, Germany. You can contact me using <geeemmixx add gmx dodd net>.

I did start to map Karlsruhe (it was whitespace before) late in the summer of 2006 and have contributed huge amounts of data. As a city map does not only consist of a web of streets, any help is much appreciated. Don't hesitate to contact me for support if needed.

Tagging presets

I have created the tagging presets in JOSM. Thanks a bunch to Frederik Ramm for inclusion in JOSM. Send any complaints or requests concerning the presets to me via personal electronic mail.

Missing map features

  • park_bench :)
  • More detailed values for the surface tag. When planning bike or walking tours, I'm not only interested in paved or unpaved, but also in surface=asphalt, concrete, gravel, ground, grass, roots (for forest tracks), raw stone (for Rheindämme, evtl. auch einfach Kopfsteinpflaster) etc. Further ideas? Well, meanwhile we got the tracktype=grade1-5
  • For later routing, it would be interested if a road is an amenity road for various vehicles. E.g. amenityroad=Car,various kinds of motorbikes, various kinds of bicycles, wanderers etc.
  • Doctor, maybe splitted into dentist, ...
  • amenity=refuge or shelter (Schutzhütte)

OSM POIs

I've written a small tool to excerpt POIs from a planet file, see OsmPoiCreator. Extracting the POIs for europe from a 20GB planet file took 1 1/2 hours. As a result, I got the POIs in GPX format. I then used various tools to convert them to Garmin POIs.

ATTENTION: As gpsbabel has no support for writing proximity alarms, I used other tools like he Gramin POI loader for Mac. Unfortunately, it was not able to process some of the gpx files for still unknown reason. Thus I used a further Mac tool for the conversion process known as gpx2gpi.

The POIs are thus provided in two formats, GPX and Garmin POI. The latter format can directly be loaded on some Garmin devices. The first format can be used in various ways:

  • Load them in JOSM to detect and correct misspelled or mistagged nodes
  • Use them on your gpx aware GPS device
  • Use software like gpsbabel resp. Gebabbel to convert to your favourite format

The POIs have been created with a proximity alarm of 20 meters. If you go out mapping in an already mapped area, your device can thus alert you about POIs already existing in the OSM database. This will help to avoid duplicated mapping efforts.

ATTENTION: If you use the files below you do this at your own risk. Do not blame me for damaged hardware or blown software.
