About me

I am mapping in the incredible Ruhr Area (german: Ruhrgebiet, map), mainly in the two towns Essen and Bochum. While mapping i put a special focus on small streets, footpaths and cycleways.

Tagging

This listing only contains some private notes at this time. Please do not rely on this information. Better take a look at the official documentation pages (e.g. page Map_Features)!

Some things to remember when tagging streets (in Germany)
key value description
amenity shelter Some hut to protect against bad weather conditions. (see Proposed_features/Shelter).
amenity recycling Use in combination with e.g. recycling:paper=true and/or recycling:glass=true (see Proposed_features/Recycling_facilities).
barrier e.g. bollard or gate Tagging temporary or permanent barriers (e.g. in german "Poller" or "Schranken"). Example: A bollard which allows bicycles and pedestrians: barrier=bollard, bicycle=yes, foot=yes (see Proposed_features/barriers).
osmarender:renderName no Supress rendering of (street) names for small ways (e.g. small parts of forked ways, bridges, ...)
access destination Tagging german streets "Anlieger frei". Use this tag e.g. as addition to highway=residential. Its now officially supported (see Key:access).
is_in Germany,Europe Tag ways in Germany. There are some discussions about the meaningfulness of this tag. Some people also add the name of the town (e.g. "Bochum,Germany,Europe").

Ways for Bicycles and Pedestrians

There seems to be a lot of confusion in tagging ways for bicycles in germany. IMO this is a result of the german nature to regularise everything by law (respectively by traffic signs). There are very complicated traffic signs (e.g. take a look at User:Kumakyoo/Untaggable) and it would be really hard to tag the belonging streets/ways as it was intended by legislature. And in many situations it is simply not clear what restrictions a (bicycle-)way has. Wouldn't it be better to rather focus on creating useful maps than to register all restrictions imposed by the public authorities? Do we really want to map useless things like this trail, officially labeled as bicycle-way?

I'm not shure, if the proposed feature "highway=cycleandfootway" is an good idea, because this would be just a 1 to 1 translation of a traffic-sign into a tag-value. In my personal perspective, focused on ways in germany, this would be adequate. But in the end this approach would leed to a really huge amount of tags, based on almost all traffic-signs over the world. And because the meaning of similar looking signs are a little bit different in other countries, we would also have many (not really intuitive) additional tags like "tricycle=no" or "skater=yes", dependend on the country the sign is in.

I like the idea to first tag a bicycle-foot-whatever-way as "this 'grounded' way (=no waterway, ...) does not belong to the 'normal street-network for powered vehicles'" and in the second to assign the restrictions imposed by present laws (bicycle=yes, foot=no, horse=yes, ...).
