Goals

If you have a goal that you are working towards or one that you would like to see get done (and are maybe willing to get the ball rolling) then add it to the list here, create a section where it can be coordinated and tracked, and a way of measuring progress. And then get on with it :-)

  • Involve more people, preferably located in different parts of the country.
  • Map all major roads (Route 1 "The Ring Road", The Golden Circle, etc.)
  • Map major cities and towns.
  • Accquire GPS data from taxi drivers and the general public

Areas well underway that need more work

Here's the current status of areas that exist.

  • Akureyri - All streets done and some footways. Bridleways, more detailed footways and areas (probably not happening soon with this low-res aerial imagery) needed.
  • Selfoss - about 60% covered
  • Seltjarnarnes - All roads and tracks done. Footpaths and areas unfinished.
  • Reykjavík - Most major roads mapped. Southern edges and eastern sections pretty much untouched. Grafarvogur and Breiðholt really need some work along with Mosfellsbær and Kópavogur. Large parts of Hafnarfjörður have been done.
  • WikiProject Iceland/Cycleways - A sub-project for mapping cycleways

Highways

  • 1 Suðurlandsvegur - Done for the most part. Need to add bridges and work on some of the junctions (e.g., the roundabouts in Hveragerði and Selfoss). Bridges are done around skeiðarásandur, but not necessarily tagged as single lane, nor are they completely done. River names, helpful for matching up the sign posts, are only done for a couple of big rivers.
  • 1 Austurlandsvegur - Done for the most part. Need to add bridges.
  • 1 Norðurlandsvegur - Done for the most part. Need to add bridges.
  • 1 Vesturlandsvegur - Done for the most part. Need to add bridges.
  • The Ring road is linked up all the way round. It's somewhat coarse, but as people add in the roads along the edges, points can be added and dragged to make a better fit.
  • Lyngdalsheiðarvegur (365) between þingvallavatn and laugarvatn is marked, but needs the paved/unpaved sections marked.

Feature usage for Icelandic roads

In the country

unnumbered, but official roads, eg roads up to farms.

note: many of these actually have numbers, but are not posted, see the vegaskrá

ongoing discussion on the talk page
F roads ongoing discussion on the talk page
unnumbered jeep tracks ongoing discussion on the talk page

In towns

Open Issues and TODO

  • converted unwayed segments. I found a lot of unwayed segments in borgafjorður that I converted to ways before 0.5, but they're unlabelled and unverified.
    • There's also still a lot of annoying little two point ways, left over from this as well. Someone with more patience, or better selection tools, there's some fun work to do around Lyngdalsheiði (between laugarvatn and þingvellirvatn) removing the junk segments
  • Rendering of "unpaved" is no different to paved for secondary/tertiary highways. (apparently being sorted by ongoing osmarenderer work)
  • Named child glaciers in the south should probably be marked separately, possibly just with a point on the named tongue? Of course, I'm not sure of a copyright free source of these names.

features that are probably useful to map in iceland, but aren't really covered anywhere else

  • Huts, both emergency and regular mountain
  • Garbage collection points in the country
  • "tourist" signs. the ones with the woven knot. I've done this as either tourism=picnic_site fairly often so far, just to get them on the map. not really sure if that's the best.

Data sources

  • Vegaskrá from Vegagerðin is a public domain document, according to email correspondence with Vegagerðin. This means it can be used as a source of names and numbers for roads. We use the more common names for the ring road, but other than that, the vegaskrá is probably a good source. I followed up with Vegagerðin, asking if they had shapefiles or anything similar for the entire roadnetwork, as of October 11, they "do not provide any shapefiles or similar datasets for outside use" I didn't feel like pushing any further, though I'm sure that they probably could be convinced to do so if someone really wanted.
  • The city of reykjavik, operating Borgarvefsjá replied to my query about licensing with this,
You are free to use what you see in Borgarvefsjá. You can download it through the Print button, which is nr. 9 from left on the tool bar on the lower edge of the screen. You should let be seen from where you get the data if you are publishing some products based on this data on the Internet.

I don't feel that's very clear, and I don't feel like chasing it up further, but anyone else feel free to, in the meantime, I won't be using it. I can provide the details of who I was talking to there if anyone wants Kpalsson 22:30, 25 October 2007 (BST)

  • There's a map of Iceland available here, designed for Garmins Mapsource. The the license states it is free for use "But it is not allowed to decompile the map or use the content in other maps without my acceptance". He might be able/willing to donate parts of it to OSM.
