Goals
If you have a goal that you are working towards or one that you would like to see get done (and are maybe willing to get the ball rolling) then add it to the list here, create a section where it can be coordinated and tracked, and a way of measuring progress. And then get on with it :-)
- Motorways - Map all motorways
- N Roads - Map all N roads
- R Roads - Map all R roads
- Railways - Map all Railways
- Dublin - Map the city of Dublin
- Cork - Map the city of Cork
- Galway - Map the city of Galway
- Limerick - Map the city of Limerick
Tagging Features
Most features can be tagged in accordance with international OSM conventions. Many of these have their origins in UK map features and will be quite applicable to Ireland.
Highway
Roads should be tagged in accordance with their official classification (usually) or their importance for traffic if unclassified. The tagging scheme presented here was chosen to match the usage of these same tags on UK roads and in the interests of useful presentation on rendered maps.
| Key | Value | Element | Comment | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| highway | motorway | | This tag should be applied to the mainline carriageways of all designated motorways. Do not tag motorway-standard N-roads as "motorway"; no blue signs means no motorway. |
|
| highway | motorway_link | | The link roads (sliproads / ramps) leading to and from a motorway (or between two motorways). Only use this on slip roads to which motorway regulations apply (the "last escape" slip road before a road becomes motorway is not a motorway_link and should be tagged as a trunk_link or primary_link as appropriate to the non-motorway road it diverges from) |
|
| highway | trunk | | National Primary Routes (N1-N33), regardless of build quality. |
|
| highway | trunk_link | | The link roads (sliproads / ramps) leading to and from a National Primary Route. |
|
| highway | primary | | National Secondary Routes (N51 upwards). |
|
| highway | primary_link | | The link roads (sliproads / ramps) leading to and from a National Secondary Route. | |
| highway | secondary | | Regional Roads (R101 upwards) |
|
| highway | tertiary | | Unclassified (or "Local") roads whose importance for through traffic is quite high. This can be the case both in urban and rural areas. |
|
| highway | unclassified | | No administrative classification. Unclassified roads typically form the lowest form of the interconnecting grid network. Note: This is not a marker for roads where we still need to choose a highway tag. |
|
| highway | residential | | roads accessing or around residential areas but which are not a classified or unclassified highway. | |
| highway | service | | A roadway providing connections to off-road destinations (such as car parks) or servicing private sites (such as industrial estates). Tagging a road as "service" indicates that the roadway should not be considered a through route nor expected to be of high quality. Pending a recognised tag for roads under construction, "service" may also be an appropriate tag for this purpose. |
|
Other Features
Bus
highway=bus_stop should be applied to nodes to represent a bus stop. The operator=* tag should be applied to bus stops. It should represent the operator of that bus route. Some current uses:
- operator=Dublin Bus - Dublin Bus
- operator=Bus Éireann - Bus Éireann
Relations/Routes can also be used to mark out the route of a bus route. Please set the ref=* tag of the relation to the bus number (eg ref=46A, ref=145). The operator=* is similar to bus stops. Since bus stops aren't numbered in Dublin, I (Rorym) have just been marking bus stops with the 'stop' role (not 'stop_1', 'stop_2' etc.).
Motorways
This table can be updated periodically to show the status and progress in mapping the Irish motorway network.
Progress Summary
Progress Detail
Guidance on updating the progress tables:
- Name If your motorway isn't listed, add a new row for it.
- Carriageways In the carriageways columns enter a rough estimate of the percentagecomplete for each carriageway. (Some motorways may have been drawn initially as a single carriageway in which case enter 100% in column 1 and 0% in column 2).
- Junctions - Total Enter a rough count of the number of junctions. Taking the highest junction number is a good enough approximation.
- Junctions - Count Enter a count of the number of junctions that have been mapped.
- Last Update Each time you update the table replace the contents of this column with ~~~~ which will automatically insert your user name and a date/time stamp.
- Notes Enter notes about progress, pleas for help, etc.

The Border
The border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland is mapped, but based on very inaccurate data. So far, no usable source of better data for the whole border has been identified, though out of copyright Ordnance Survey maps would be one option, if available.
For now, a practical approach is to collect waypoint information for known points on the border. Road crossings are the most obvious source here. Typically the border can be identified by a change in road surface and/or a signed change between km/h and mph speed limits. The way point can then be made into a node and the existing border split and spliced to use it.
It is useful, when placing a border node on a surveyed location, to tag the node with something like note=Border Crossing RoI/NI, source=survey. Try to avoid moving nodes tagged in this way.

Gaelic Names
Gaelic (Irish) is the first official language of Ireland, but English is the most common spoken and written language. Most places and street names will have both a Gaelic and English form. The Irish name should be entered in the name:ga tag, and the English name should be entered in the name:en tag, with the common usage name give in the name tag. For example Dún Laoghaire a town in south Dublin is commonly known by the Irish version of it's name Dún Laoghaire even though it has an English version of the name Dunleary.
Modern Irish street signs use a plain font with an alphabet which includes the letters A to Z plus vowels with fadas Á É Í Ó Ú (in Irish this is shown with an acute accent, unlike Scots Gaelic, which uses a grave accent to denote the same thing). Older street signs can use an Irish script font which includes alternative forms for some of the letters, along with letters with a dot above them, which is transliterated into Roman script as an 'h' following the dotted letter. The following table gives an example of the mapping:
The following table lists common English words used in street names and their Gaelic equivalents:

Past events
The second State of the Map conference was held in Limerick on July 12th and 13th, 2008. Ireland hosted OSM people, cartographers and GIS enthusiasts from all over the world!
Steve Coast went to Dublin to give a talk on OpenStreetMap in November 2007. Following on from this talk, we (assorted members of OSM and ILUG) held a mapping weekend. Both the talk and the party were very successful; video and slides of the OSM Talk are available thanks to Gareth Eason.
