Heads Up
This is to give a heads up notice, I'm working on converting, polishing and uploading all locations based on the GEOnet Names Server. This is a fairly complete if not exactly accurate data. It does give a full list with English transliterated names of all towns/villages as well as mountain peaks and various other features.
This will create some duplication for places that already exist in OSM but will flesh out place names in our little country. Exact location and merging with existing places can happen later.
If you have objections or ideas it would make sense to raise it now. Contact me through the wiki or OSM at http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Baruch
Upload done!
I started initially to hand check each node and translate it to Hebrew but it was going to take too long. Instead I'm uploading all the data in its raw form and everyone can update the nodes, translate them and place them in their proper location. If you move a node to a place you think is the correct one (you can use the WMS maps for this) remove the accuracy=minutes tag.
Conventions
- Naming
- Use tag "name:he=..." for adding street names in hebrew.
- The "name" tag is also used for Hebrew
- Use "name:en" for the English name
- Roads
- Single digit roads are either Motorway or Trunk, Road 2 is a Motorway while Road 4 is a Trunk.
- Double digit roads are Primary
- Triple digit roads are Secondary
- Quadruple digit roads are Tertiary
Goals
- If you have a goal that you are working towards or one that you would like to see get done (and are maybe willing to get the ball rolling) then add it to the list here, create a section where it can be coordinated and tracked, and a way of measuring progress.
- Tag major intercity roads all around Israel.
- Create a really free alternative for http://www.freemap.co.il which has a huge map database but map data is not given for free. The community is being abused to build the data but but data is downloadable only in a binary format.
Goal: Netanya
Talba: I'm slowly adding streets and roads of Netanya. We'll see how far I get...
Baruch Even: I'm also living in Netanya and added mostly the Kiryat Ha'Sharon area, not having a GPS yet I'm doing a rough sketch. A loan for a GPS device would be appreciated until I'll get the Neo Freerunner.
Goal: Beer Sheva
Yuri Magrisso: I've accumulated a large number of tracks in Beer Sheva. I am planning to map it in the coming months. I am taking photos of the name signs of most streets, but if someone lives in Beer Sheva, he's welcome to check for what's missing and fill it up.
OpenStreetBugs
You can easily mark incorrect points at OpenStreetBugs. By default the site displays the mapnik layer. Therefore, you should change (each time) to the Tiles@Home layer before anything else. Use the green "+" button, to add a new note.
