Proposals for conventions
Road Types
Regarding road types of Japan map, I propose to use the "highway=" tag as follows; comments welcome. -- Tatata 07:27, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

To make a clear distinction between secondary and tertiary, I'd like to update the comments of the table as follows.
secondary
- For roads more than 2 lanes excluding major roads (motorway, motorway_link, trunk, trunk_link, primary, primary_link), and correspond to anything below.
- leading to and from major roads.
- linking machi or chō.
- forming a boundary between machi or chō.
- 主要道路 (motorway, motorway_link, trunk, trunk_link, primary, primary_link) ではない2車線以上の道路で、次に該当するもの。
- 主要道路から直接繋がる道路。
- 町を繋ぐ道路。
- 町の境界となる道路。
tertiary
- For 2 lanes roads (1 lane on each way or 2 lanes on one way) within machi or chō, excluding major roads (motorway, motorway_link, trunk, trunk_link, primary, primary_link) and secondary.
- 主要道路、secondaryに該当しない、町の範囲内の2車線の道路（片側1車線の双方向または2車線の一方通行）。
unclassified (minor)
- For small roads, just 1 lane.
- 車線が分かれていない道路。1車線の道路。
