Automated edits/Math1985/Betting
Proposal
For all objects within the UK tagged with shop=betting and name Betfred, Coral, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power or William Hill, the tag shop=betting will be changed into shop=bookmaker.
Rationale
The tags shop=bookmaker and shop=betting have long been used in parallel for the same type of shop. In January 2014, the tag shop=bookmaker was accepted in a vote, while making the tag shop=betting at the same time discouraged.
At the time of voting, there were 526 instances of shop=bookmaker and 496 instances of shop=betting. At the moment, there are 1054 instances of shop=bookmaker and 519 instances of shop=betting. This suggests that newly added bookmakers typically follow the approved tagging scheme, while many old bookmakers remain in place that follow the shop=betting scheme.
Having only one form makes life easier for both mappers and data consumers.
I realize that automatic edits are often undesirable. When badly executed, automatic edits can easily introduce additional mistakes, especially when executed by mappers without local knowledge. Automatic edits can also have undesired side-effects. Moreover, automatic edits might offend mappers who do not agree with the edit.
In particular, I recognize that it is important that:
- automatic edits have wide community support;
- automatic edits do not introduce mistakes or otherwise destroy the work of local mappers.
I believe that in this case, both of these requirements are satisfied.
There is community support for shop=bookmaker both by actual mappers (shop=bookmaker is twice as popular), and by members of the tagging mailing list (15 out of 16 voters voted in favour of shop=bookmaker instead of shop=betting).
It is known that the five named chains are all bookmakers, so there is no risk that this change will introduce incorrect data.
In addition, I will take the following measurements to minimize any risks:
- I will follow, of course, the Automated_Edits_code_of_conduct and the Mechanical Edit Policy.
- I have created the current page to document this automatic edit.
- I will discuss this edit at the talk-gb mailing list (link). Although not formally required, in order to guarantee community support, I will invite list members to vote on this automatic edit. I will not proceed without at least 8 votes with 2/3 approval.
Technical implementation
- I will used JOSM combined with Overpass.
- I will download the data from overpass, manually select the UK only, and run the following filter:
shop=betting and (name=Betfred or name=Coral or name=Ladbrokes or name="Paddy Power" or name="William Hill")
Subsequentially, I will change the tag shop=betting to shop=bookmaker, and upload the data.
- I will do this edit within one changeset with tags "mechanical=yes" and "comment=Rename shop=betting to shop=bookmaker, see http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Mechanical_Edits/Math1985/Betting".
- This will be a one-time edit.
- I will allow users to opt-out. If users want me not to touch some objects, they can leave the relevant object id's on this page, or contact me by e-mail.
