Adding Details, and Tagging
Once you have a way completed, you need to add tags in order to see them rendered on the map. Tags are key-value pairs describing properties of a way or node, such as its name or its type. There are many tags, some far more common than others. When using JOSM, tagging is accomplished by adding key-value pairs to the Properties/Memberships panel.
You can use any description of an object you like as a tag. However, the data needs to be interpreted by applications to be useful (e.g. to render a map) and so it is best to try and use one of the well established tagging practices.
- Here is a guide on what tags to use.
- Once you have made your edits, you then need to upload your changes to OSM.
- Make sure you do not copy data from proprietary maps. Learn here about copyright.
