Cavite Road Network Mapping Party/Announcement
What is a Mapping Party?
Mapping Parties are events where anyone can come and participate in the OpenStreetMap project. OpenStreetMap is a free and open source map that can be contributed, edited and used by anyone anywhere. Mapping Parties are social events where experienced and new mappers can meet to share and learn more about the project. The events are generally held in a public place, and allow time for discussions, mapping and editing.
The event is open to all. Are you a newbie interested in OpenStreetMap? We will help you get started right away. Are you a business owner who wants a map showing your business location? We can help get your business location in the map. Are you a Garmin GPS unit owner who wants a routable map in your device? We will load our map into your GPS unit. Are you up for a roadtrip/joyride? Then come join us in this event!
It's fun. It's free. You can help.
Schedule of activities
The Mapping Party will happen on a Saturday in September 11, 2010.
|6:00am–7:00am||Jollibee-Chowking Madrigal, El Molito Commercial Complex, Ayala Alabang, Muntinlupa (near the Alabang Town Center)||Morning meet-up and briefing. Participants can also choose to have breakfast at this time.|
|7:00am–5:00pm||All over Cavite!||Roadtrip/joyride! Participants will drive all over Cavite and gather GPS tracks. Don't forget to have lunch in a nice countryside restaurant!|
|5:00pm onwards||Taal Vista Hotel, Tagaytay||Dinner and socials. Participants will then converge in a cafe or restaurant somewhere in Tagaytay to share stories and generally have some group fun.|
What will we map?
- Collect GPS tracks of all the major roads of central and southern Cavite, including connections to SLEX.
- Visit the poblacion (town center) of the municipalities and cities in the target area and note the location of major POIs such as churches, town halls, public markets, plazas, hospitals, and universities.
- Capture the location of other major POIs and landmarks such as tourist spots and entrances to gated subdivisions and industrial parks in the course of driving all over Cavite's road network.
Cake slicing is a term used in OpenStreetMap Mapping Parties where the area to be mapped (the cake) gets divided into smaller areas (the slices) such that each slice can be surveyed and mapped by around one to three people. It's basically your simple divide-and-conquer approach to mapping! The assignment of which cake slices will be surveyed by which people will be done during the briefing in the morning. In this Mapping Party, the slices will be composed of the roads to be surveyed and not land areas in general.
