Do Not Deprecate Tags

Caution: This page contains opinion of a single person, and was neither discussed on large scale anywhere nor represents point of view of majority of OSM users.

OpenStreetMap has a free flowing and growing tagging scheme. New tags are constantly being suggested/uses but they should never replace/depreciate current tags because.

  • Various renderers and programs may be using those tags, the maintainers may not hear about the change for a while/ever.
  • Mappers are slow to change, some of them never read the wiki/mailing lists/forum/irc/etc, and so will continue mapping the first way they learnt.
  • There should be no need to.
  • It is better to expand data than to change it.

There may be a few exceptions. But NEVER EVER run a bot to replace a 'depreciated' tag.
