Durham is a unitary authority in North East England at latitude 54.743, longitude -1.528.

Durham unitary authority was formed 1 April 2009 replacing the previous two-tier system of county and district councils. It replaced the county council of Durham and seven district councils.

Together with the three unitary authorities of Hartlepool, Darlington and Stockton-on-Tees (north of the river) it forms the ceremonial county of County Durham.
