A mapping party in Hosur, Tamil Nadu

What are mapping parties?

Mapping parties are events where anyone can come and participate in the OpenStreetMap project. OpenStreetMap is a free, open source map that can be contributed, edited and used by anyone anywhere. Mapping parties are social events where experienced and new mappers can meet to share and learn more about the project. The events are generally held in a public place, and allow time for discussion, mapping and editing. The event is open to all.

It's fun. It's free. You can help.

Mapping Party Learnings

Please feel free to add what you learnt from the mapping party

  • Plan, plan, plan - having a good plan is the key to a successful mapping party
  • Prioritize whats to be mapped when the team is small and the are is large
  • Split up and map - individuals can cover more are compared to 2 people teams with one person mapping and the other person driving
  • When mapping cycling is better/faster than walking
  • It's essential that all required software are installed and ready to use
  • Photo-mapping is faster provided you have the right version of JOSM
  • It helps to start early and beat the heat
  • Its essential that along with laptops people should also carry data cards to ensure connectivity
  • There has to be a hands on session on using JOSM before hand so that mappers can start uploading/editing right away.
  • Should have read Mapping Weekend Howto before announcing the mapping party
