Sorry for adding in English. It would be great to have a short summary of this activity in English. Particularly helpful would be information about the source & status of the data (further details can be worked out with Google Translate & basic pattern matching).

  • Yep, a (short) summary in english would be very helpful. Thank you. --Kellerma 19:46, 5 April 2011 (BST)

  • There is a bunch of data provided by Yahoo for roads and paths in Japan. This is most useful for areas in the north that were almost entirely unmapped before. The data, which is divided into cities (the size of counties in the US) is available for download at the locations described in each prefecture's section. The data is in gpx format, so it can be downloaded, opened in JOSM, and then uploaded. This is an ongoing process, as noted on the page. However, care must be taken to properly merge the imported data with what's currently on the OSM servers. Also, some (many) of the gpx files are very large, so importing them in a single chunk could be delicate. Please email the OSM-JA list if you have other questions, or if you'd care to help. (Or, perhaps you could grab a section that hasn't been done and do it yourself.) If you email in English, those of us who speak some Japanese can help translate what you're saying, if it's a fairly simple thing. (I've gotten very quick and informative responses in the past.) Also, based on my own observations, the Yahoo data is not perfect, and in rare cases, it seems to be outdated. My own GPS traces are more accurate, but of course the Yahoo data is much more comprehensive. --Douglas P Perkins 13:26, 1 July 2011 (BST)
