Kern County is a County in Central Valley, California at latitude 35°20′42.00″ North, longitude 119°06′16.20″ West.
The county contains a diverse set of land features. A majority of the county is used for farming or petroleum drilling. There are also major military bases in the county. Kern County contains parts of the Los Padres and Sequoia National Forests. The wide variety of features in the county provide a challenge for adding proper land use tags. A majority of features in the county were added through imports from both city and county data sets in 2010. Permission was obtained to use the data from both city and county GIS departments. The county is an example of what can be done through imports but it is also an example of some of the challenges we face when importing massive data sets. The county is one of the densest places in the world. This can be both a good thing and a bad thing. It is good because of the completeness that no amount of hand editing can accomplish. But a large amount of data also limits what can be downloaded at one time to edit at least with the current tools.

Buildings
The City of Bakersfield released a complete set of all the building footprints within the city. There are currently some newer residential areas that still need to be added.
Trees
The City of Bakersfield released a dataset of all the public trees within the city.
Parks
Parks and park features were added from the City of Bakersfield.
Landuse zones
Landuses were added both from the city and county zoning data. The city data is generally accurate. But the county landuse files tend to be more general. Often residential or farm were used for entire square areas rather than defining the actual area. Sometimes especially in rural areas, it appears that the projection used in the original creation of the data was off, causing it to not completely align with imagery. Sometimes the datasets tended to overlap around the exterior edges of Bakersfield and should be removed or combined if there are still any areas that exist.
Cleanup checklist
- Check and remove duplicate buildings
- Add religion type tag to churches
- Remove or combine duplicate areas from city and county data
- Reduce nodes in individual areas
- Simplify features that expand over multiple areas
- Align landuse areas based on imagery
- Lowercase names of park features
- Check NHD data doesn't overlap
- Check NHD canals and ditches are tagged correctly
- Fix TIGER data
- Remove extra tags not needed like kern:Comb_Zn, kern:Zn_Cd1, acres, etc.
- Remove tags that contain null values
Things to add
- Add parking lots manually
- Add new buildings not originally included in dataset both manually and through updated city data
- Add names of oil feeds.
- Add farmyard areas manually
