Usage
For describing the predominant usage of land along a road or other way. This could be used for rendering if landuse=* area information is not available, or for routing. For example a road marked abutters=residential is likely to be slower than one through open country.
This tag is useful when:
- You are just passing through an area;
- You are not familiar with an area; and/or
- You do not have Yahoo! Aerial Imagery for the area you're editing.
If you are very familiar with an area or can definitely recognise landuse from Yahoo imagery, the landuse=* tag can give better rendering results. Even in these circumstances, abutters can be marked in order to provide an exception to the general rule: for example, retail areas consisting of flats-above with retail fronting along a street in the middle of a predominantly residential area. It is also useful to specify abutters on highway=unclassified in urban contexts, to help distinguish them from rural contexts.
Current preset values in Potlatch are:
- commercial - offices and small businesses
- industrial - includes light industry
- mixed
- residential
- retail - shops
