This universal key is useful to group identical devices on the name node, way, area instead of creating a dedicated object for each.
There are numerous possibilities to use devices=*, it has been used and reviewed when several identical power transformers are located at top of a single pole. As to not confuse the support with the actual devices, it's possible to use this key as a subkey.
