The key faces=* indicates the number of faces of the feature.
Most often used on advertising devices tagged with advertising=*, and in that case it indicates the number of faces of the advertising devices. A lot of them only have one face (for example and obviously wall billboard), but very often they have two faces (grounded billboard, totem, smaller board), sometimes three or four (big advertising sign for hypermarket).

Recommended use

faces=1: the advertising device has only one face, generally in front of the flow of vehicles or people, or parallel to this flow.
faces=2: the advertising device has two faces, generally one in front of the flow of vehicles or people, and one reverse to this flow.
faces=3: the advertising device has three faces, to display message in all directions, generally for big advertising sign of hypermarket.
faces=4: the advertising device has four faces, to display message in all directions, generally for big advertising sign of hypermarket.

faces=* can be used on nodes, or areas.
