The Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) Protected Areas database is another product with the same license as the rest of the GeoBase Data.

The details product description can be found here

As usual for any import the standard attribution source tags are needed.

English: Atlas of Canada 1,000,000 National Frameworks Data, Protected Areas

French: Données cadres de l'Atlas national à l'échelle de 1/1 000 000, aires protégées

Filename is protarea.shp inside 1M_PROTECTED_AREAS.shp.zip.

Data

The source shp file contains 1,398 polygons (including multi-polygons)

It was converted using shp-to-osm.jar version 0.7.3

java -Xmx512M -cp shp-to-osm-0.7.3-jar-with-dependencies.jar Main --maxnodes 50000 --shapefile
 d:/NRCan_PROTECTED_AREAS/protarea.shp --rulesfile d:/NRCan_PROTECTED_AREAS/rules.txt --osmfile
 nrcan_protected_area50_000 -t

The resulting conversion created 7 .osm files which are approximately 50,000 nodes each. Please do NOT upload these files all in 1 go. (as this action is counter productive for the development of OpenStreetMap. see http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Additional_Help Beginners' guide. ALOT of work has been done with drawing in park boundaries all across the country. Please be careful & contact the author of the park that exists to see what their source of the their information was.

User:Acrosscanadatrails is working on many parts of the Country for the Across Canada Trails project. So he is working on getting many of the Parks loaded. Feel free to contact him on the talk-ca@openstreetmap.org if you have questions. He can re-convert the whole file if needed.

Using JOSM, open up all 7 .osm files so you can see if your favorite provincial or national park is in there.

You can use the JOSM WMS layer from Atlas of Canada it lists the parks at 1:1million (so 1/2 as good as the .osm files) but still good for tracing.

Québec conversion (in OSM)

This importation contains name in french and name:en in english.

1. Use shp-to-osm with a modified rulesTXT for language key issue.
2. Open the file in JOSM
3. Find all objet with "addr:province":Québec (type:relation | type:way)
4. Copy
5. Create a new layer
6. Paste
7. Save the new layer as nrcan_protected_areas_quebec.copied.osm

Generated file: nrcan_protected_areas_quebec.copied.osm 6 559 388 B -- 2010-05-06.

Compressed file: ...tar.gz 1 037 170 B -- 2010-05-06.

Update: The National file now contains the nrcan_protected_areas_quebec.copied.osm file along side the 7 .osm files http://www.mediafire.com/file/2n5zdjmlwm1/nrcan_protected_areas7files_andQuebec.zip There is a FIXME that is needed to be implimented for the french label.

fixme=the french name need to be changed from ie "Gatineau, Parc de" la to "Parc de la Gatineau"

Rules

This is the rules.txt file that was used for conversion it can be downloaded here http://www.mediafire.com/file/zm2zlkmiz3z/rules.txt

--acrosscanadatrails 03:24, 31 July 2009 (UTC) The .osm files will be available soon.

Import Method

To maintain quality control, and Community involvement, it is HIGHLY recommended that these feature be imported manually. By opening up the file in JOSM, then manually copying over each protected area, AFTER viewing what is already listed. In many cases, there are empty nodes which have been placed from a prior import attempt. These need to be manually removed.

All NRCan Protected Areas in British Columbia are imported as of Jun 21 2010.

Test Area

Like with all imports, a test area is done. To allow for community feedback. And allows time to fix tags where need.

The test area is here. For Juan De Fuca Provincial Park and the 1st part of Pacific Rim National Park.
