Navilock is german company based in Berlin and produces consumer GPS devices like Receivers and Data Loggers and also nagivation software.

  • GPS receiver can be used with USB (via the Prolific USB2Serial driver) and/or Bluetooth serial port emulation, any system (but no software provided)

Mini-CD with proprietary software, installs as iTravel-Tech Application. Functions:

  • Upload data from device,
  • Google,
  • PhotoTagger SW,
  • Upload photos to Flickr,

  • Installs Prolific USB2Serial driver

Not so good things:

  • Bluetooth cannot be disabled
  • No waypoints
  • Requires proprietary software to read the logged gpx data
  • Software for windows only
  • Default installation requires administrative rights to run; but if you install into a writable directory instead, you can use it as ordinary user
  • Only google supported

Pros
  • PL2303 USB-Serial converter chip (good Linux driver support)

Based on the engine board EM-411 from Navilock mounted in a more or less waterproof casing and an attached USB cable.

  • USB Powered (max. 100 mA)
  • 1.5 m USB cable attached to the device
  • Single status LED near the cable outlet (might not be available on earlier devices; might not work when in binary mode)
  • Very accurate when used in a car

Works good with gpsd!

Pros

small, lightweight, concentrates on basic features, cheap in Germany (60 Eur at reichelt.de). Possibility to set PDOP, TDOP, Sat Nr masks,... for user that knows the GPS parameters quite well

Cons

insufficient manual with mistakes, not enough informations for beginners in GPS, files can't be copied or downloaded from stick and need transformation by included software

  • Push to fix to record specific waypoints
  • Small display for status
  • USB-interface for reading log files and configuration via windows-software (GPX export possible)
  • Linux and macs are not officially supported, device appears as storage, but the original log files seem to be in proprietary format
  • Free linux/mac reader wpl1000reader (makes gpx), for change of settings windows is still needed
  • Another free reader with ability to change settings naviread (GIT repo: git clone git://git.asdn.eu/naviread)

Software update crashed. Could be saved by manually downloading the *.img file on the stick and cycle power :-) HB9DTX 28 August 2009

After more than 3 years of heavy usage, the unit stopped working. Position stuck at 0°00 even after cold start. I opened the case (4 screws) soldered 2 small wires on th Lithium rechargeable battery on the circuit board, and load it to 3.3 Volts for about 1 hour. After a cold start from the Windows utility, the NL-456 worked as before, giving correct position fixes. If the problem re-appear, I'll change the backup battery. HB9DTX January 2013

In 2018, 8 years after first use, same symptom. This time loading the battery didn't help. I bough online an MS621FE 3V rechargeable Lithium battery, switched on the soldering iron and replaced the battery. The problem is gone! Hopefully still a few more years of happy mapping in front of me! HB9DTX March 2018

Pros

In comparison to the NL-456DL it finds a fix faster and seems to produce more accurate tracks. See detailed comparison (German).
