Idea
Produce an offline version of OpenStreetMap. There are many parts of the world with little or no internet access, this is a way to bring a map of the world to them. Many people have done this with Wikipedia, but no-one has done it with OSM yet.
By now (2011) this has been done multiple times, so see the list of available software or other possibilities of using OSM.
Variations
- Just a whole pile of static images that the user can install on their PC and browse using a web browser
- Offline stack of the OSM database, i.e. an Offline GIS application
- Offline / decentralized editor.

Static Images
The idea is for the user to have a CD or DVD. There would be a HTML page that looks like the main OSM main page. One major problem with this is the size of the images. The whole world at the highest zoom is a few TB [1].
Navit is an opensource car navigation system. It has a custom small map file format that might be able to store all of the OSM planet on a CD. THe Navit programme is adequade enough, but it might be possible to connect an existing or nicer rendering engine onto it to make it display good maps.
