This page documents the conventions for mapping administrative entities in the Philippines such as regions, provinces, cities, municipalities, barangays, and everything in between. This page documents such conventions as agreed upon by the WikiProject Philippines community.

Overview

LGUs in the Philippines are mapped using a combination of administrative boundary relations and place=* nodes. The boundary relations mark the jurisdiction of the

LGUs. The place=* nodes mark the central location of the LGUs that are considered settlements: cities, municipalities, and rural barangays.

Boundary relation

Tag Usage Examples
Additional required tags
name=* Specifies the common name of the entity. Manila
ref=* Specifies the 9-digit Philippine Standard Geographic Code of the entity. 130000000
wikidata=* Specifies the Wikidata ID corresponding to the entity. Format is "Q". Q1461
Optional tags
official_name=* Specifies the official name of the entity. This can usually be found in the entity's charter or seal.
  • "National Capital Region" for Metro Manila
  • "Science City of Muñoz" for Muñoz, Nueva Ecija
*name:abbr=* Specifies abbreviations for the name(s) of the entity.
is_in=* Specifies the name=* of the higher encompassing major LGU. This tag is redundant because its information can be derived from GIS operations, but it can facilitate easier data use for consumers, and it can also be used for cross-checking and validation.

Convention summary

Government entity admin_level=* admin_centre member place=* designation=* Maritime extent is_in=* Other remarks
Philippines 2 place=city node of Manila Territorial waters (12 NM from the Philippine archipelagic baselines [RA 9522]). Treaty of Paris limits should not be used. is_in=Asia
Region 3 place=* node of the administrative center city/municipality Municipal waters (15 km from coastline [RA 8550]) is_in=Philippines
Province 4 place=state node of the capital city/municipality province Region (except Basilan) The boundary should exclude Highly Urbanized Cities. Note that this may result in an admin_centre node that is outside the provincial boundary (which is actually the case).
Provincial board district 5 Province
City 6 place=city node of the city; node is located at the city center or downtown area tag place=city on the city node, not the boundary relation Region if Highly Urbanized City; province otherwise
Municipality 6 place=town node of the municipality; node is located at the municipal center or downtown area tag place=town on the municipality node, not the boundary relation municipality Province
City/municipal council district 7 Coastline City/municipality
City/municipal administrative district

Districts of Quezon City (Diliman, Cubao, Novaliches, Balintawak,Santa Mesa Heights, La Loma, etc.)

8 place=suburb on the node of the district. It should be on the center of the district. Tag place=suburb on the district node, not the boundary relation. City/municipality
Barangay zone 9 barangay zone City/municipality
Barangay 10
  • place=village: for rural barangays (most cases, as designated by PSA)
  • place=quarter: for urban barangays (as designated by PSA) or those forming urban poblacion areas. Consider retagging where the barangay is designated as urban by PSA and is bordered by one or more urban ones that form a larger urbanized area.
  • Node at the barangay central area (near barangay hall, or major local street intersection/crossroads)
Tag place=village or place=quarter on the barangay node, not the boundary relation barangay City/municipality PSA sub-classification is not sufficient to determine whether a barangay must be tagged or retagged as a place=village or place=quarter. Some rules of thumb are
  • PSA-designated urban barangay completely surrounded by rural ones: tag as village (or keep the tag as it is for those already mapped).
  • PSA-designated rural barangay completely surrounded by urban ones: tag as quarter (or keep the tag as it is for those already mapped).
Sitio/purok 11 place=neighbourhood (urban) or place=hamlet (rural or remote) node of the sitio/purok; node is located at the sitio or purok's central area tag place=neighbourhood or place=hamlet on the sitio/purok node, not the boundary relation sitio/purok Barangay
