Project of the month

Education Month

June 2011 is education month. We'll map the places that we associate with educating ourselves and others. Is the primary school that you attended included in OpenStreetMap? Your high school? Add those places to the map. We'll look at post-secondary schools and other places associated with education as the month progresses. Learn about places to learn about places.

Primary and Secondary schools

The Project of the Month is to include primary and secondary schools from your area in OpenStreetMap.

Required tags

A school may be included in OpenStreetMap as either a node or areas , but should not be included as both.

Either way, add the following tags to the school element.

• amenity=school
• name=Public School 123
• operator=New York Public School Board

To add more detail consider using mapping other features of the schoolyard and school.

• amenity=school # for the school yard polygon
• name=Public School 123
• operator=New York Public School Board
• building=school # for the school building polygon(s)
• sport=multi # for sport fields

Note: A school may have multiple buildings. These should not have the amenity=school tag. One feature, one OSM element. One school, one area drawn around the school grounds.

Optional tags

Add addressing information for the school as well.

• addr:housenumber=*
• addr:street=*

Wheelchair accessible?

• wheelchair=yes/no/limited

It would be also nice if you could contributed to the discussion on a tagging scheme for the level of education offered by a school: Talk:Tag:amenity=school#Level of education.

What is Project of the Month?

Description

Project of the Month is a monthly collaborative mapping project. Each month a specific task or theme is chosen for mappers around the world to consider as part of their regular mapping activities. PotM are announced as the last Project of the week of each month, for the following month.

Goals

Fun is first. The timing is flexible. If you want to start early or continue for a few extra years, that is not a problem. That is a feature. Map the things that are important to you and when you see something that reminds you of Project of the Month consider adding it as well.

Fun

OpenStreetMap is fun. Mappers like fun. Project of the Month is something fun to add to your regular mapping activities.

Cooperation

Often mapping is a solitary activity. Mapping parties are one way mappers cooperate. PotM is another opportunity to cooperate with mappers in a month-long, distributed mapping party.

Results

It can be fun and inspirational to see the results of our cooperative mapping. Each PotM will aim to have a way to see the results of the project afterwards, at a minimum, and to watch the progress of the project when possible.

Origins

Project of the Month was created through refinements of SteveC's Project of the week as suggested by the OSM community. @jokru requested longer project cycles for greater effect. Others in the community have requested feedback showing the progress and effect of projects.
