Rationale

Platform screen doors (PSDs, also known as "full-height platform screen doors") are series of ceiling-height glass doors on the edges of railway and subway/metro platforms, usually in underground stations, which open and close with the doors of train carriages. They separate the platform edge from the track and usually the tunnel, usually to prevent passengers from falling onto the tracks and to lower ventilation costs.

Automatic platform gates (APGs, also known as "half-height platform screen doors", "high-height platform screen doors" or "low-height platform screen doors") are similar, the only differences being that they are usually not ceiling height (about 1–2 metres / 3–7 feet tall) and are more often installed in above-ground stations.

Both of these are common in metro systems in East Asia and parts of Europe, but are generally absent from most other places due to the age of infrastructure.

For indoor mapping each door could also be separately tagged (as many subway/metro systems have a reference code for each door). This also helps if only some of the doors are wheelchair accessible (due to either the train design or the platform design).

Currently there isn't a way to tag these in OpenStreetMap, and it could potentially help with accessibility maps as well as 3D rendering.

Tagging

Key Value Element Comment Rendering Photo
barrier platform_doors way Platform screen doors. The right side of the way should be facing the track. If the platform is mapped as an area then draw another way on the platform edge. If the platform is mapped as a way then add the tag to it. Could also use material=*, height=* and ref=* none, or transparent black line Dongdaemun Platform(Line 1).JPG

platform_protection door node One platform screen door. door=sliding should also be used none (rendering should be due to door=sliding) Platform screen door of Ecological District Station.jpg
platform_protection gate node One automatic platform gate. barrier=gate (and gate:type=sliding?) should also be used, although I am hesitant to use barrier=gate as most of those are currently a very different sort of gate and this should have different rendering. none (rendering should be due to gate:type=sliding) Sunny Bay Station (Hong Kong).jpg

Rendering

Zoom 16–19 only for the barrier=* ways, if any, and zoom 19 only for the individual nodes.
