Proposal

A key for tagging areas made principally or mostly of solid rock.

It is supposed to map the landscape type or the surface characteristics in areas where the bedrock is mostly uncovered leaving large areas of bare rock in big slabs or as a featureless area. It could be smooth or rugged with cracks and crevasses and do not imply any special class of passability. It could be plain or leaning, when it gets to steep consider natural=cliff instead.

The area should have little or no vegetation (sparsely vegetated areas where 90 % of the land surface is covered by rocks).

Pictures

A coastal area of bare_rock

Here are some examples of coastal areas that could be tagged with natural=bare_rock: Limestone field, Point Lobos, USA, A small skerry.

Some examples of monolithic mountains Cerros_de_Mavecure where it is obvious that there are parts that not are steep enough to use natural=cliff as an area.

Not to be confused with

A light grey area.
