Staðfangaskrá Import

Goals

Staðfangaskrá, which is Icelandic for "access address", is a dataset of addresses in Iceland, constituting both GIS information (GPS location) and description (postal code etc). The data has been released by Þjóðskrá Íslands (Register Authority) under a Open Government Licence for public sector information.

The coverage of OpenStreetMap addresses in Iceland is of various quality, in the metropolitan area the coverage is pretty complete and in various smaller towns but others are completely missing. This dataset enables us to fill in the gaps.

In the cases of towns which already have buildings we add the address to the building (for example Hveragerði). In the case of no buildings being on the map (due to missing imagery and or missing data) the addresses are added as nodes (for example Akureyri).

We also want to maintain the integrity of associated street relations by adding imported addresses to relevant existing relations.

Community support

I, (User:Stalfur), plan to do the import using the import account Staðfangaskrá import, and am an active member of the Icelandic OpenStreetMap community. The Icelandic OSM community was notified and had no objections thread detailing Akureyri import suggestion.

Apple's data team will be helping to continue the import for the rest of the country. We spoke with Stalfur and other community members and emailed the talk-is list with no objections. Stalfur suggested we use the same import account he used.

Schedule

The import will be run as appropriate, identifying areas lacking in addresses and tackling each one on its own.

Initial list:

Import Data

Data is refreshed daily at [1].

Background

Data Description

The register contains the following data columns: SVFN, LANDNR, HEINUM, MATSNR, FASTEIGNAHEITI, POSTNR, HEITI_NF, HEITI_TGF, HUSNR, BOKST, VIDSK, SERHEITI, DAGS_INN, DAGS_LEIDR, GAGNA_EIGN, TEG_HNIT, STADA, ATHUGASEMD, X, Y, HNIT.

We will use the location (X and Y), street name (HEITI_NF), house number (HUSRN), house letter (BOKST), building name (SERHEITI), house extension (VIDSK), unique ID (HNITNUM) where applicable.

OSM Data Files

Original import: Each postal code will be imported on its own as applicable - extracted from the main source.

Going forward, the rest of the data will be imported through Tasking Manager grid cells.

Import Type

Original import: On a case by case basis each municipality will be evaluated for import. In the case of existing addresses then gaps will be identified and only those uploaded. In case of wholesale missing addresses an upload per postal code will be done.

Continuing the import: For each Tasking Manager grid cell, the missing addresses will be evaluated and added. In the case of existing addresses then gaps will be identified and only those uploaded.

JOSM upload will be used.

Data Preparation

Data Reduction & Simplification

The data is looked at for each Tasking Manager grid cell - possible duplicates with existing source removed.

Tagging Plans

OSM Tag Source Justification
addr:street HEITI_NF
addr:housenumber HUSNR (and BOKST when applicable)
addr:housename SERHEITI (or applicable tag)
ref:HNITNUM HNITNUM The address's unique ID from the Staðfangaskrá dataset. Adding a reference tag to the unique ID in the Staðfangaskrá data will allow easier maintenance work in the future.
source:addr=Staðfangaskrá Staðfangaskrá

Data Transformation

Manual verification.

When applicable we will add/modify street names based on the address data. And where appropriate we use Já 360 imagery to confirm street names and add missing ones.

Data Merge Workflow

Each node is evaluated seperately.
