Description

This is a deprecated tag and describes an UK-only road. Please tag it as highway=track or highway=path as appropriate, and its legal designation with designation=byway_open_to_all_traffic or designation=restricted_byway.

It is a minor road often with an unmade surface. The public have a right to travel along. It is used by the public mainly as footpath or bridleway. There exists byways open to all traffic (BOAT) and restricted byways only for non-motorized vehicles.

  • Do not use highway=byway because it does not show what you can see on the ground. Use designation=* and the access=* to show the legal rights instead.
