State-specific notes
Maryland state routes are often but not exclusively maintained by the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA). With the exception of a few stretches of highway, nearly all roads in Baltimore City are maintained by the city Department of Transportation. Highway routes within city limits are largely some combination of unsigned, sporadically signed, or incorrectly signed. For example, a shield on the otherwise unsigned route MD 129 at North Paca Street & West Franklin Street uses a generic federally-standardized state route shield rather than the Maryland state route shield (9747812304
9747812304).
Individual traffic sign nodes along a route can be mapped using traffic_sign=US:MD:M1-5 per the system described at MdMUTCD. This is a form of micro-mapping, but could be helpful for identifying exactly where signs are on some of the more sporadically signed routes.
Maryland does not have any county route networks. Baltimore does have a series of road routes known as the "City Gateways" which are designated entry/exit points to city limits, tagged as network=US:MD:Baltimore:Gateway. These differ from typical highway road routes in that they are simply referred to by street names and are given a single signpost or pylon at the boundary with surrounding Baltimore County.
