Use amenity=parking tag to identify a facility use for use by the public or by customers or other authorised users for the parking of cars, trucks, motorcycles, etc.

Alternatively, use building=garage, building=garages and landuse=garages for private buildings used for the storage of vehicles. Also, amenity=car_sharing for parking spots for car share vehicles (car clubs), amenity=bicycle_parking for bicycle parking, amenity=motorcycle_parking for motorcycle parking, tourism=caravan_site for dedicated bays for caravans and mooring=* for boats. For parking spaces along streets see parking:lane=*.

Mapping a car park

Draw an Area area for the car park and tag it with amenity=parking. If you don't know the actual car park area or don't have time to draw it out then just tag a Node node (but never use both a node and an area for the same facility). Car parks are also available as presets in most common editors, e.g. as "Car Parking" in iD, and can be accessed via text autocompletion.

Use name=* for the name (for example "Southlane Carpark") and ref=P1 for a reference. The capacity=* can be used to say how much space there is for different types of user. In addition use operator=* (for the name of the operator), website=* (for a website for the car park).

Roads leading to the carpark and exiting from it should be tagged as highway=service. Parking aisles can be tagged as highway=service with service=parking_aisle and appropriate oneway=* tags. As with the rest of the road network, care should be taken to create a routeable network. Ticket machines can be mapped as amenity=vending_machine in combination with vending=parking_tickets. amenity=parking_entrance is used to map entrances and exits to underground or multi-storey parking facilities. The amenity=parking_space can be used to map right down to the individual parking spaces.

Several car park areas, each with one-way aisles

Standard method to draw parking of a complex size - ones that consists of disjointed areas, or because the area consists of multiple disjunct parts, or has holes is to use multipolygons.

It has been suggested that the type=site relation can be used with site=parking to group parking spaces and parking entrances together to form one parking facility, as described on Proposed features/parking. Currently however there is almost no support for this among either mappers or data consumers (analysis) - amenity=parking is far more widely used.
