Comments welcome.

Only common in some places

I'd never heard of this before, because they are illegal in the UK, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_hatch

Illegal to use or to operate? --Lulu-Ann 13:07, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Is that really an amenity?

As useful as those baby hatches are, at first I have to say I don't think this is anything one would look up in OSM or plan a route to. At least not at the time one would need it. As far as I know those baby hatches are always near/in hospitals, so I wouldn't tag it as amenity. It's more a detail which could be added to hospitals. In my opinion that would be sufficiently tagged. --BearT 19:03, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello BearT, in Germany often organizations with a low budget are the operators. Why not offer them the chance to put a free of charge map on their homepages and their flyers? That's where the women search for it. --Lulu-Ann 15:08, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
We have one of them here in Antwerp (only one in Belgium) which isn't anywhere near a hospital. It's in an anonymous house somewhere in the middle of a residential area. So it's not an option to tag that as hospital. --Eimai 19:36, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Ok, then I guess that is specific to Austria, since I only know them near hospitals. (I guess it's much cheaper, since medical staff is available 24/7 with our without the hatch.) --BearT 19:40, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
That's a european view. In third world baby hatches are often in homes orphans. --Lulu-Ann 15:08, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

I don't think this is relevant to be put on a map. A young mother would not look on OSM to find a baby hatch nearby. --MrJott 20:55, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Agree, but that doesn't have to be reason not to put it the database. OSM --Skywave 09:39, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
As stated above, the mothers will find the map on homepages of operators or on flyers which will be happy to have a map free of charge. But only if we map them. --Lulu-Ann 15:08, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

service instead of amenity

Since this is more a service than a amenity it should be tagged as service_industry=care:baby_hatch or something similar! See Proposed_features/Service_business --Phobie 17:03, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

I'd see it rather in a medical=baby_hatch, which I am planning to propose. --Lulu-Ann 08:30, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
