European cross-border payments in euro

Regulation (EC) No 2560/2001 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 December 2001 on cross-border payments in euro lays down rules on cross-border payments in euros in order to ensure that charges for those payments are the same as those for payments in euros within a Member State. Use the international IBAN/BIC account details for this filing a standard european account transfer. This should be included in the main-page since people could be scared off by the fees mentioned there. Also there are no Paypal fees for the OSM-Foundation.

Bank account in Germany

I propose to set up a bank account in Germany. Bank transfers are the usual method of payment here. This way donators can save transfer fees. On Wikipedia the usual amount donated is about 20-50 EUR, so fees of 15 Euro are prohibitive. Longbow4u 11:33, 29 August 2007 (BST)

I second that, would be most convenient and quite likely to collect a few Euro at least...
Or save a few Euro at least ... --Tessarakt2 19:18, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
unnecessary, see cross-border payments in euro. --jjaf.de 21:55, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
I agree with this idea. It's more common than paypal. I think FOSSGIS e.V. can own this german account? --!i! 18:54, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
I added a donation page to osm.de with all paiment methods to FOSSGIS e.V. [1] --!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 13:50, 29 July 2011 (BST)

Bank account transfers

Transfers in Euro

Is it possible to transfer Euro amounts to your UK bank account? It seems that at my bank all transfers to EU and EEA countries are free as long as they are in Euro currency. --Tessarakt2 19:18, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

yes, see cross-border payments in euro. --jjaf.de 21:55, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

The person sending the money, bank fee

your bank may make a charge of €15/$15 or more

On my bank it says 0.50 euro. I'm a lucky one I guess :) , or I might find the truth later on... Logictheo 20:39, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

You may have used inner-european cross-border payment in euro. --jjaf.de 21:55, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

Paypal doesn't does work

Following the paypal donation links (Single donation) I get "This recipient is currently unable to receive money" and OSM gets nothing...

No Paypal donations works :( !

  • This issue is now resolved, donations are working again. The problem was caused because PayPal needed to perform some additional verification checks on our account due to our status as a non-profit organisation. 80n 15:07, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Well, related or not to Paypal, in current campaign page (http://donate.openstreetmap.org/server2015/), I manually specified an amount in CDN and I was asked for a user id and a password without any explanation! Selecting the 50 euro box worked but using CDN dollars.--jfd553 (talk) 22:32, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

Transparency

I'm happy to support OSM also with donations. But I would like to see better who is doing what in this project. This includes names of responsible individuals/companies and also the financial statements for the past and budgets for the future.

from Ceyockey: I think this is a pretty reasonable request. Thanks for considering this. --00:44, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

Progressbar like Wikipedia

It would be fine to add some progressbar into wiki to show how many $$ we need to keep project alive. And subpages can show how many $$ was spendto to .... or what we urgent needs. ( servers of course :) )

I second this idea --Jamiegray (talk) 22:10, 1 July 2019 (UTC)

Paypal is not cheaper in Europe

Since SEPA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_Euro_Payments_Area sending Euros is cheaper. Often it's free. --Wieland 14:48, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

http://donate.openstreetmap.org/comments/ shows errors

It shows this error: "Name When Amount" . The whole page is grey. I hope you can get this working because I think it is a wonderful way of confirmation for a donation. Just like wikimedia's live donor list is :) Logictheo 22:05,22:07 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Fixed now. Thank you for reporting it. -- Firefishy 01:21, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
It says 404 NOT FOUND now. If it was deleted the link should be removed as well. Chrabros (talk) 04:16, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Repeat asking for email

Please add the "Please also send an email to treasurer@openstreetmap.org stating the amount and start date of the standing order so that we know when to expect it." also to the part "International donations", because international donators usually don't read the UK part at all. -- Unsigned: Lulu-Ann

link to Sponsoring

Hi I try to get some hardware sponsors on the sponsoring page. Would be nice, if you would link from this donation page. --!i! 17:17, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Multilanguage template

Hi, might it be possible to add the multilang template to get an translated german page? Would be nice for discussion, too --!i! 18:56, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Translated to German --Lulu-Ann 13:03, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
Great! Thank you. Hope you don't mind, I've locked the page for edits now. Happy to makes changes on your behalf. -- Firefishy 13:31, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

Targeted donation

from Ceyockey: Is it possible to target a donation to a particular aspect of OSM? For instance, targeting to support of the Development vs. Production computing environment; or targeting toward personnel support vs. hardware support? I would anticipate at this time the answer might be 'no', which is fine, but it would be useful to know if it is possible, along the lines of, for instance, supporting a public radio station through a particular program or program block (therby signaling support for that content). Thanks for considering this. --00:42, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

This has happened in the past for special fund raising. I added stuff to donate.osm.org at the time. Best to ask OSMF Treasurer. - Firefishy 14:14, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

Request for page categorization

from Ceyockey: I find I am unable to edit the main Donations page . . . which is quite OK. I had thought to categorize the page to Category:Administrative. If those with edit privileges to this protected page agree, thanks for doing so. --00:50, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

Done - Firefishy 14:14, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
Hello! Can you replace the category in a Russian page with redirection? --dr&mx (talk) 09:21, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

You don't need to have a PayPal account

It isn't working for me. I have credit card and I don't have (and cannot create) PayPal account. How can I donate? Big green button on http://donate.openstreetmap.org/ is opening page where I should create account or login with PayPal account. --Bigopenmac 21:11, 12 July 2011 (BST)

At the paypal 'login' screen there should be an option on the left to send money via Credit Card without a paypal account. --Firefishy 10:26, 13 July 2011 (BST)
I'm so sorry but can you check this information? I have pagescreen PayPal login screen--Bigopenmac 11:04, 13 July 2011 (BST)
OK, I've looked into it more. "Paypal optional" is only available for a limited list of countries. Sorry. We should likely setup and additional payment processor. BitCoin! ;-) --Firefishy 12:49, 13 July 2011 (BST)

Bitcoin account

Due some political problems, Paypal looses feed here in germany. There is a Open Source P2P paiment system called wikipedia:Bitcoin[www.bitcoin.org] that becomes more and more popular for the free creative commons community.

Might the OSMF get an account for bitcoin, too please? --!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 13:57, 29 July 2011 (BST)

User:Firefishy will accept your transfers [2] --!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 10:21, 27 October 2011 (BST)
It's been years since my request, please add it to the official donation page, as the BTC use is rising --!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 08:09, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

Thank you that it had been added to the official page and the wiki page as well. Could you please transform it to a clickable link? like [3]? --!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 13:55, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

OpenStreetMap is not an organization.

Are you talking about the foundation? Then say so. --Lulu-Ann 12:47, 2 August 2011 (BST)

Sounds reasonable. --Ceyockey 02:19, 3 August 2011 (BST)

Add Flattr

Hi, please someone add the flattr option as noted here [4] --!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 10:22, 27 October 2011 (BST)

After almost two years, there don't seem to be any objections. So could someone please implement this? The OpenStreetMap Flattr profile is here: https://flattr.com/profile/openstreetmap --Tordanik 23:47, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

Add funding drive

Can anybody please add a big label for the funding drive? --!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 16:37, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

Servers drive

It would be VERY useful to indicate what aspects of OSM would benefit from the monies contributed to the Servers drive. I personally added a note about Nominatim updates ... woefully overdue and critical to so much ... but I'm not at all sure if the Servers drive will have any impact on this. --Ceyockey 01:42, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Suggest creation - Userbox for "I have donated"

Suggest creation of a userbox which allows people on their personal pages to indicate "I have donated in Drive XXXX" ... which goes hand in hand with actually naming the donation drives in a traceable manner. For instance, the current servers drive could be named the "Holiday Hardware Drive of 2011". I believe that there is as much benefit to be obtained from giving specific drives "personalities" as there is to giving advertising campaigns personalities (e.g. the "signthendrive" VW campaign). --Ceyockey 01:57, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Sure, feel free to extend it in any way Template:UserDonation --!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 21:55, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

IBAN/BIC

Is it somehow unsafe to simply put the IBAN/BIC code as visibly and prominently as possible on the website? Why does one first have to send an email to obtain them? Unfortunately all I have to donate to OSM is inordinate amounts of my time, but if I would be contributing financially I'd simply send money by bank transfer. It took me 15 minutes, at least, to find out how to do that. Most people with actual money in their accounts would have already given up long before that.

--Polyglot 21:06, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

+1 --!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 07:58, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Where should I add it? The details are available here: http://www.osmfoundation.org/wiki/Donate/International_Bank_Transfers -- Firefishy 21:40, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
Well the thing is, that the current informations are spread over multiple pages, which is bad as donating should be as easy as possible :( The german community had similar problems, but I think with the new website we centralized it [5] --!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 06:42, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
A link should be added to Donations#Electronic_Funds_Transfers (which askes for email and stuff instead). Please do not forget the translated versions. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 16:08, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Add link to donors page

Please add a link to the donors (comments) page here, I always have to google for it. --KrilleOSM 21:33, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

Done. -- Firefishy 21:39, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

OSMand live donations

Hi, OSMand has a 'Live' feature that collects 50% of the money spend by map packages and gives it for participating mappers via bitcoin. Is it worth to mention at this page? --!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 16:31, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

My impression is that the page mostly describes how the reader can donate to OSM(F) directly. There are other products where part of the purchase price is contributed to OSM, many of which predate the OSMAnd idea, but none of those are listed here. So ultimately, I think it doesn't really fit with the rest of the content. --Tordanik 16:05, 6 October 2017 (UTC)

Accept Altcoins

(Not sure if this is the right place for a discussion like this)

Is there a reason why there is currently only a bitcoin address listed?

Bitcoin has a rather high transaction fee compared to other so called Altcoins. I'd like to at least see a addition of for example Litecoin (LTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCC) and or Dogecoin (DOGE). Jbah (talk) 21:39, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

meta: You are more or less right here for this discussion. I guess discussing on the main "talk" mailing list would see more echo, though. See Contact channels. However, just wait a bit for official replies here...
Bitcoin was the first big cryptocurrency - and historically the transaction fees were not high. Note that the bitcoin address was added already back in 2013. --aseerel4c26 (talk) 21:28, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

Update return address for all donation links

Resolved: This edit request was answered.

Please update all return parameters of the PayPal links, because there is a new thank you page in the OSMF wiki.

Mention server donations?

Maybe linking also https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Servers/Tile_CDN would be a good idea? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 08:19, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
