Old 'Name finder/Address format' merge proposal

With this edit 8 December 2009, User:Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason proposed merging this page 'Geocoding' with Name finder/Address format page. No reason given

If we as someone suggested merge the Geocodig page with Name finder/Address format - it is important to remember that "Name finder/Address format" gives just one format for a country. Geocoding tries to list all posible combinations to be used for free form geocoding.

Ok that's from 2009. I guess the idea was to merge information from the Name finder/Address format page into this one if there's anything useful to be rescued from there. Still a valid idea, but essentially all namefinder related docs are ancient history now. I'm going to remove the label from this page but leave it on the Name finder/Address format page -- Harry Wood 10:49, 18 October 2012 (BST)

Move page to 'Geocoding naming formats and challenges'

At the page title "Geocoding" I would expect something more general, listing the various software options for geocoding with OpenStreetMap data (Nominatim being the main one). Something rather like what is found on Search engines

This page is currently quite a long list specifically describing the challenges of different naming and addressing formats in different regions, hence I propose we move the page to a more descriptive longer title: 'Geocoding naming formats and challenges'

In future this will make way for 'Geocoding' to be a redirect to Search engines, or moving that page to geocoding, or some other name
