i.e. (motorcycle:type=standard;dualsport;chopper;sportbike) is not the ideal way to tag shops which sell every type exept scooters.
(Unless you're currently forced to to similar stuff with brand=KTM;BMW;Honda;Yamaha;Suzuki...)
A construction like motorcycle:type:scooter=no would be better.
An easier way would possibly be motorcycle:type=exept_scooter

No clear definition of the different values

The page does not currently explain how to distinguish between the different "types" of motorcyles. When translating this page into another language and culture, how should a term like "chopper" or "scooter" be understood? Note that in English, a "scooter" is often a 2-wheeled, non-motorized (or electric) vehicle which is propelled by kicking the foot against the ground, and it can also be a "mobility scooter", a kind of powered wheelchair. The "standard" type seems to be undefined. Without better definitions and descriptions, these tags have problems with Verifiability, a core in Openstreetmap which means that another mapper should be able to confirm if a tag is still correct. --Jeisenbe (talk) 13:25, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Usage on places that both sell and rent

Suppose this tag is used on places that both sell and rent motorcycles. How is someone suppose to tell which the motorcycle:type tag applies to? I think this is another case of where something like rental=* or sales=* works better. On a shop=motorcycle we already know the place sells motorcycles. So rental=dualsport or sales=sportbike makes intuitive sense. Plus, that way it's clear that the particular "type" of motorcycle is being rented or sold. Whereas, with motorcycle:type it isn't clear. Otherwise, you'd have to go with something like motorcycle:type=dualsport;sportbike + motorcycle:sales=sportbike + motorcycle:rental=dualsport. Which is just convoluted, not intuitive, and massively violates the KISS principle. Compared to sales=sportbike + rental=dualsport. Which totally negates the need for the motorcycle:type tag and makes it explicitly clear what the type of motorcycle being sold or rented is. Along with having other benefits. I'd love to hear a good counter argument though. Including why motorcycle:type is the "simpler" tagging method in this case. --Adamant1 (talk) 22:35, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
