Sport

What's the difference between room=sport and room=sports? What tag shall we use for indoor stadiums and pitches? --Fkv (talk) 17:28, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

Not usually a single room but an area? As the key is sport=* I would be consistant and use room/area=sport. Warin61 (talk) 01:39, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

room=restaurant

Why would you specify room=restaurant? First, that information is already available from the amenity tag. Second, a restaurant is rarely one room, normally it contains at least an eating area, kitchen, and toilets, all different rooms.--Pbb (talk) 16:55, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

Clean-up

I have removed some common values from the list, and placed them in a separate list of values to avoid. These values can and should instead be defined with other existing and accepted tags. If I have created problems with this change, then accept my apologies and undo my change. But then please add more information about why these tags should be used in combination with equal tags. (For example room=restaurant and amenity=restaurant.) -- Pbb (talk) 09:20, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

stage .. not a room?

As a stage opens out to an auditorium should it not be tagged as an area? Same with an auditorium and an orchestra pit - they open out so are not rooms with 4 containing walls? For the moment I have used the description tag on these areas. Warin61 (talk) 01:42, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

Outdoor classroom

How to tag an outdoor classroom? Jidanni (talk) 16:08, 22 December 2019 (UTC)

room=class building=no indoor=no outdoor=yes / outdoor=room? Jidanni (talk) 16:09, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
No. The key room is for indoor 'rooms' that have walls and a roof. What makes this 'outdoor classroom' permanent? Fixed chairs and desks? A fixed black/chalk board? If it is portable and moved around then it may not be possible to map its location, in this case I would think about tagging as a subtag on the school. Warin61 (talk) 21:39, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
Well we see lots of stone benches, stumps, even less mobile than in indoor classrooms. We also see lots of roofs, but few walls however.
Anyway I thought this tag was about "rooms", not if they were indoor or outdoor. Also it might not be part of a school, but instead an independent location, managed by the Environment Protection Bureau. Jidanni (talk) 00:45, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
From the front page description: marks a room inside a building. From the first paragraph "The room=* key is used to mark rooms inside a building, which is a space surrounded by walls and doors. This is useful when mapping indoor spaces. " Clearly indoor rooms only. Tags exist for the roof, building=roof to which you might then add a description=* of "outdoor class room". Warin61 (talk) 02:11, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
OK good. Then that first paragraph needs to be updated to the reality that outdoor rooms also exist. Jidanni (talk) 08:37, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
NO. Changes to the meaning of tags should only be made after the agreement of the community. You and I do not form a community. If you look at British English the meaning of room is indoor. I think you will need another tag. the room=* is used by and created for use on indoor object and I think only rendered by 3D renders. It is a subtag of indoor=room. Discuss this on the tagging list. The tag "room=yes" does provide information!

I've read in the key's page that "room=yes" does not provide information. This is false, it does state that there is a room in its most basic sense: a volume in something made to host a certain purpose (not even a necessarily a building, like troglodyte rooms, underground rooms, etc). Sometimes rooms are not easily identifiable. For example: - room disaffected and in standby because its purpose have been placed elsewhere - abandoned industrial buildings - abandoned military buildings - ancient troglodyte rooms which's purpose has been lost Also sometimes we might just encounter such rare specific purpose for a room that we don't have/know yet or will never have a value, in this case room=yes would be perfect fine. So i propose to remove this statement in the page. --SHARCRASH (talk) 10:09, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

I came to the talk page to discuss this very issue, but upon doing a bit of research, I realised that indoor=room is the "main tag" that is used to define a room without any extra properties. I shall update the table to make this clear. TwistedSnake (talk) 09:31, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

Avoid room=toilets

This wiki page says: Avoid the following values: "room=toilets, A room containing several toilets, use amenity=toilets instead." amenity=toilets can be used only for public accessible toilets tho, as the wiki says: "amenity=toilets is for toilets "open to the public""

So I think room=toilets shouldn't be marked as a value to be avoided in my opinion, since it can still be used to map private toilets. --Ivanbranco (talk) 12:05, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
