Why not simply ref=* ?

If that road also uses another ref, why use unsigned_ref=* instead of adding it to the key ref=* ? --Jgpacker (talk) 11:14, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

My understanding is that it's so your average consumer-oriented navigation app does now show or pronounce irrelevant information (refs that have no signs at all, or tiny signs by the side of the road). I have seen both of these cases in my area of the U.S. Mattflaschen (talk) 15:10, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

I see the verifiability argument for totally unsigned roads. A mapper cannot be certain...but when a road has a small sign then you are commenting on the sign size and not the veracity of the reference number - Jnicho02 (talk) 10:20, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
